    I think Samia had her belts rather on her waist than hips. Her costumes were not super, super elaborate, but she always looked stunning.

    Imagine my delight today when out shopping at a vintage store in SF when I saw this beauty...and it fits! It needs a tiny bit of repair on the back closure , the belt, and some elastic in the belt so it hugs a little better.

    I wish I knew this costume's history.

    Thank You!

    The thrift/vintage gods were smiling...and I had some help in a friend who lives in the area who spotted it the other day and emailed me a photo. He knew I liked purple and shiny things. lol

    OMG. No wonder we have such a bad rap. Turkish dancers in particular.

    Funny vintage clip of Ozel Turkbas. The guy seems to be singing in French about lokum and baklava (lokum is Turkish Delight candy).

    I believe this is from the late fifties or early sixties:

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r31wHaKf5qQ]YouTube - Ozel Turkbas "Bedevilled Belly Dancer"[/ame]

    p.s. Some of the YouTube comments are questioning whether this is actually Ozel. According to Aziza of NYC, daughter of Joanna, who actually danced with Ozel, it is her.

    There is a thread about this clip on Tribe: Ozel Turkbas on Youtube - Belly Dance Legacy - tribe.net

    He's singing about his girl (presumably the dancer) who was gone on a trip to Orient and after waiting for her for a long time, all she brought him back are desserts (loukoum, baklava).

    This is hilarious, thanks ofr posting!

    This song reminds me of Uskudara Giderken, the Turkish song that Eartha Kitt sings.

    And for my vote, I don't think that's Ozel dancing, the body type is completely different and the face.
