Re: Ultra Bad-Ass Vintage Costumes
That is Badawia. She was from Jordan, I think, she really was a Bedouin. I first saw her dance back in 1976 at a show and workshop here in Eugene, Oregon, organized by Barbara Sellars (now a writer, then a dancer). Badawia was absolutely mesmerizing and connected with every person in the room when she danced. My heart instantly fell in love with her, too.
Here is a link to a thread about her on Tribe. There are lots of other vintage pics on that thread, too:Badawiya - tribe.netLast edited by dunyah; 08-29-2009 at 10:09 PM. Reason: added info

Re: Ultra Bad-Ass Vintage Costumes
Wouldn't it be nice to have the URL where the photo was found posted with the photo? There are interesting stories behind those photos. A couple of the photos I found on this thread did came from the North Beach Memories section on Gilded Serpent.
The Gilded Serpent presents The Stars of North Beach, San Francisco
I'm so glad to see the interest in these vintage costumes and photos. GS tried to see if the community was interested at one time and posted these articles-
Iklas- Iklas for the Gilded Serpent
We wanted to find out about these ladies. As you can see on the page, a few dancers did send us some info.
Charmaine wrote a cool one about Vintage LPs and their covers-
Charmaine revives interest in Vintage LPs for the Gilded Serpent
We have more photos yet to post if the community is ready.
Please when you post a photo from GS, post the page link too. We can at least get a little traffic of curious dancers who would like to know more.
Thanks!
Lynette

The Badawia picture probably came from this article-

Re: Ultra Bad-Ass Vintage Costumes
Sorry, thats not good enough. Besides, when I went to the URL behind the pictures they took me to the Shem's flickr site. If that's not enough of a stab in my heart, also notice the picture appears alone on the page without any supporting text. The idea is to make it easy for the reader, not make them jump through more hoops. If this common courtesy does not become common practice I'll have to figure out what to do next, I guess. Increasing mine and everyones overhead with lawyers and all will just discourage community rather than stimulate it, which has always been our goal. A little respect and support isn't too much to ask now is it? This sort of response is very discouraging...

You are able to put the picture in a url type of code. Unfortunately it is a two step process.
Look at posts below.

Re: Ultra Bad-Ass Vintage Costumes
Way cool! Thanks!
Pasting that line of code (replacing blanks) within this reply box will produce a linked picture? The other pictures posted don't click through like your posting of Iklas. Isn't she gorgeous! Thanks again. I hope the whole community on this forum is able to absorb and use this trick.

Re: Ultra Bad-Ass Vintage Costumes
Unfortunately that's hotlinking. The problem showing an image via the original image source, instead of hosting it elsewhere and giving proper credit, with that is it increases the bandwidth needed by the person/page you're linking to. With high-traffic threads like bhuz this CAN make the original source exceed their bandwidth capability (which hurts how the run and can cost them money) if GS realizes this and is cool with it, all good.
...and the person being linked to can always decide to switch the image at that location so you get anything from a request not to hotlink to explicit NSFW closeups showing up.
The best way to do it (and maybe this is what you did and I can't tell) is to host the image elsewhere (say, on photobucket) but have the image itself serve as a link to the original page of origin.Last edited by ozma; 09-02-2009 at 05:17 AM.

Beats the hell out of me... Oh well. I was just trying to help her, since that is what she wanted to do. Too late though, already removed the code to do it. Sorry for the trouble.

Re: Ultra Bad-Ass Vintage Costumes
I didn't mean to jump on you, you give a good solution for what she wants.
But I didn't know if she understood what hotlinking the image (instead of just linking the page URL) might mean for GS. If the image between the img /img tags is the original image url (like http://www.gildedserpent.com/art29/g.../iklasport.jpg ) then it is that image's source that will have increased bandwidth needs. Places like Photobucket are set up to do that, often other pages hosted privately are not.
I think you should keep the code up. The url= code link idea is great...as long as the image they are using is hosted in a way that doesn't strain the bandwidth of the original source.
(hotlinking is also sometimes called inline linking)Last edited by ozma; 09-02-2009 at 05:36 AM.
