Re: "What are you working on?" June, 2009.
wooooooooooooooooo!!! ozma, that is stunning! good job!!!
i'm working on my gore skirt i asked for your help on :) the fabric i found is The Most Droolworthy teal i have everrrrr seen hehe. i was hesitating between colors but when i saw this one I Knew lol. i cut it up and am starting to sew the skirt together. yay! the fabric is crinkly stretch velvet. i've decided to wear the crinkles 'zigzag'ily, don't what it'll look like on the finished product but hopefully okay ^^
only problem (so far) is, no stores around here sell chiffon, which i need for the inserts. the closest i've seen is a kinda light airy cotton, but it doesn't fall as smoothly as chiffon so meh :(
anyhoo. here's drooly teal! (it's actually just a touch more green than in the pic. the reflections are a lovely dark turquoise. soooo purdyyyy)

Ozma - Congrats on your eman reconstruction! It's looks better than it did originally. I have also been called upon to do many an eman fix so I can sympathize. It doesn't seem like the quality of fabric/beads is not always what it should be...
But hooray for June! I just finished this costume which I believe is exactly what Cinderella would wear if she belly danced. It has a built in unitard and completely esposed thighs under mesh. All one piece. Naked naked!

Ok, the Eman Resurrection came out fantastic, and I would LOVE to see that naked dress on a live body. Wow!
I am playing with making my first lycra bra and skirt. I finally did some appliques that I like and put the first on on the bra (well, half of the bra). Still will be adding more beads, and the swags are just temporary, but I wanted to see how it would look with the drapes. Next, I need to run the rest of the appliques and cut out the skirt. . .

Oh My Goodness! The costumes you ladies have posted are fantastic

**************
My attempts toward costuming have crashed and burned. Sigh. I used to be good at this. Was about to give up sewing completely, then...
A friend of mine said her body is changing the older she gets and didn't have a costume that fit for an upcoming gig. Promised to try and make her a folkloric dress. It came out beautifully! The dress matches her hair perfectly and fits her like a second skin. She looks like a Grecian Goddess.
Will do the interfacing on the neckline today and it's done. Hoping to get a photo of her in it when she comes over for her last fitting.
Was so excited about this success, I bought more fabric ,r:;

Here is my new blue bedlah that is in the works. I'm loving all the various shades of the blue in it. Can't wait to get it finished and start making skirts for it!

Re: "What are you working on?" June, 2009.
I have been working on everything BUT costumes lately! ..cr.: Things have finally settled down and I can get back to a costume I was working on in the early spring.
I hate having to stop and start! It is so hard to get "back into it". I've hit my groove again with this one and have found it's direction again! Thank god!

Wow June is off to a finishing start.
Ozma - Excellent redo!
Estha - Love it!
Invokethegoddess - Wonderful colors...
I have just been working on clothes for myself, since I have been having a "What the hell size do I wear?" dramafication.
I am waiting for some things I am going to redo that I ordered from here. So updates to come when I get them started.

Ozma: Wow! Stunning work on the Eman. It's gorgeous!
Basima: I love the colour choices: they're very rich. I can't wait to see how it turns out.
As for my piddly efforts at sewing, I finally finished altering/lining/fitting a new costume, and it's given me the dangerous urge to get back to a from-scratch bedleh project I started ages ago. Likelihood to end in disaster? High.

Thanks Alrana!
I also love the aspect of using "positive energy" on the costumes! I love the healing properties of semi-precious stones.

Re: "What are you working on?" June, 2009.
these all look so pretty!
i am in the process of turning the turquoise costume in my avatar into a turquoise and light pink costume. i was inspired by this gorgeous turquoise and pink bella i saw and since this is a Turkish designed costume, i thought why the heck not put some pink on it?? i'm going to need a LOT more beads tho...i've been sewing for an hour now and am not even done with one side of the bra..

Re: "What are you working on?" June, 2009.
I need your expertise!
I just bought a beautiful costume from India Arts.
My problem is the bra. The bra is a tie back, halter style - like you'd find on a bathing suit. I'm going to put bra hooks on the back and convert the halter ties to regular bra straps. What I'm not sure of is how to add support to the cups. The cups are not padded but do have a lining so padding could be added. I'm a 36 D cup so I need support, preferably an underwire.
I've thought about taking the underwire out of a standard bra and trying to somehow sew it in but I'm not sure how to start. How do you determine how to "line up" the underwire so it's in the right place? Has anyone done this and can give me pointers?
I don't know if this makes a difference but the bra has an attached belly drape. The bra itself is fairly simple - just embroidered with a few mirrored pieces.

Re: "What are you working on?" June, 2009.
hmm, what if you just took an entire strapless bra, cut off the side area at the point where the stretchy bit meets the firm, and then sewed the bottom edge into the halter's bottom edge? I think that would be less work and more supportive as well.
Like this:

depending on the shape of the cup, you might also need to trim the cleavage area so it matches the garment shape as well, and then sew that edge to the neckline of the halter.

Hmmm - Ozma might have a better handle on this.
I usually sew the bra top or top, onto a bra that is one cup size larger than when I wear. Depending on the fabric weight will determine if you really need a larger cup size or not. I find if the material is lightweight, I can purchase a bra of my own size with no problems. The heavier material or notions, usually shrinks the bra. I buy a bra that I am comfortable with.
For large busted people who need support, like myself, I don't cut off the sides. You can either sew the back of the top on, or you can sew the bra up to the part wear you tie, so you can still tie the top like it is designed. That really depends on how much material there is to tie, because you don't want the bra back showing. I only had this problem one time. Most of the time it will work out.
If not, you can always buy more material that matches the top to add some more fabric. Or, if you don't want to tie the back, I usually use the backs with the hooks, that you can purchase at the fabric store, or you can save the ones from the bra you cut, and sew it back on.
I do the sewing all by hand and have had to do this for my classmates.Last edited by bdaddiction; 06-03-2009 at 03:47 PM. Reason: another member posted a picture.

You ladies are really talented - I am so inspired. My problem is I don't have much time but I am taking some time off in December and I am thinking of doing my own creation based on what I've seen here. Thanks for sharing!!
