Rocking the pixie?
I have very short hair. I love long hair, and had it for many years, but it just doesn't work on me. I cut it off in 2004 and never looked back. Until I found belly dance.
I'm new here and have been combing this forum for posts from dancers who have short hair, but most of the posts on the topic seem to be about using extensions, wigs, falls, and scarves. I've never tried any of these things, and I'm sure they're super fun, but I was just wondering if any of you rock the short cut while dancing. Has anyone found a way to use it? Are there special things you can do with your hands while others are playfully holding their hair up?

Re: Rocking the pixie?
I have a fairly short a-line bob and so don't have much hair to play with. I dress it up with sparkly clips, headbands (like the ones at Claires they make with fake rhinestones), or small flowers.
For the hand in the hair movements. I will still put my hand(s) on/near the back of my head and give a little sassy shrug or act like I'm fluffing it a bit.

I just cut my hair recently into a bob, and the hardest part for me has been how dependent I was on my hair for accents. I cut it partly to force myself to break old habits.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
I wear my hair short and dance. I don't do restaurants and stuff but I've never had any qualms about it. I like my hair short much more than I liked it when it was long - and it was nice long.
I do oriental dance, btw.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
I would much rather watch a dancer who has short hair or long hair pulled away from her face than one who has long hair and tosses it around. I just find it much too distracting and messy looking.

I've done a deep side part with the front of my hair swooped up, the sides slicked back with a generous dusting of glitter. If your hair is long enough at the nape you can do little baby pigtails and clip flowers to them to dress up the back. Everyone loved it!

Re: Rocking the pixie?
I had my hair VERY short (spikey all over) for a while. I wore a 3/4 wig or a wide scarf and fake pony for gigs (restaurant or party) since I felt like long hair was part of the costume for clients -- and fun for me!
But I didn't usually bother for haflas and such. I liked to spritz it with some glitter hairspray or squitch a little glitter into it with my fingers while it was still damp with styling product. Long glittery earrings really show up with short hair, too!

Re: Rocking the pixie?
Wow, so there's lots you can do! I've just been sort of pretending that I have hair to hold up, which feels silly - I look like I don't realize that I don't have any hair (I haven't performed yet so this is just for class). The sassy shrug/fluffing it up would probably feel more like I'm actually doing something. Maybe I should invest in some sparkly hairthings too! Thanks for the suggestions!

Ayperi of Maine has the cutest hair-do and she rocks it and I think it's lovely and graceful.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
Aw, thanks, Tanya!!
penguinberry, I cut my hair in August that year (uh... 2003?) and started taking belly dance classes in September. I'm glad I cut it before or I never would have! :)
I will tell you that various people have requested that I wear a hairpiece. I have decided not to because it feels fake and therefore i don't feel like I'm moving naturally, which affects the quality of my dancing. You might have a different experience, though! All different products out there...
Here in Maine we don't have a large Arabic community so my gigs are primarily for Americans anyway. There are plenty of photos on my website--if they want someone with long hair they can hire someone else! :) I say it's all in how you carry yourself. Whatever you do, don't apologize for your hair... Good luck!

Re: Rocking the pixie?
Like Ayperi, I actually often wear mine sleeker rather than spiky for performances and so fluffing it doesn't feel right, but you can cup your head under the occipital to create a frame or otherwise frame your face by passing your hands around your head as if smoothing your hair, if that makes sense.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
You could do something like Bozenka did in this picture, I always thought this was a lovely look on her.

Woops, that link didn't quite work. It is the picture on the right in the second row on page 2 of the gallery. There is also another picture on page 3.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
I like the glam Hollywood short cut in the video, a bit of wave and curl, attractively styled. You don't see it often these days. A Marilyn style on the longer end or short would also be very cute.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
Short hair never rocked for my dance persona.
It became important enough an issue for me to grow my hair out.
Falls and ponytails and clip were an uncomfortable stopgap that never felt right to me. Clip-in extensions were the best option I tried, but I'm not sure if you could blend them into a pixie.

Re: Rocking the pixie?
Thank you, hun! ..l;,
I wonder if Azhia has a tutorial on how to do finger waves? ,r:;..g.:
I have a pixie, and severe long-hair-envy. My hair is really lazy, doesn't like to grow and lies flat most often. It is baby fine, thin and there isn't a lot of it. So really, the most flattering shape for my hair is a pixie, sad as my ego is about this realization~ how I long for sheets of my own hair to swing around at whim, to actually have something in which to rest my hands and when I am slowly rising from a dramatic bow, to actually have something to sweep back from my face*. Alas! 'Tis not to be...so I am so grateful, penguinberry, that you started this thread and to know there are at least a few others out there...
*I do wear wigs usually; some of this for 'character' but a lot of it is from a feeling of inadequacy around the long-haired-bd-community which I recognize as being all in my head. ..l;,

I can do finger waves on someone else's head, it's getting the back of your own head that can be a pain!

Re: Rocking the pixie?
One of the ladies in my troupe has short hair (actually, two others have short-ish bobs too, but the one gal has more "all over" short hair, if that makes sense) She'll sometimes wear a wig for certain things (maybe a fall for the khaleegy, faux braids for haggalla/folk looks--though even us long haired gals usually pop on the fake braids for that--or for bd if the mood particularly strikes her.) But, for other performances, she just dances with her own hair. She, too, did finger waves for a particular performance. Other times she'll wear a cute little jeweled headband (and "fluff" the hair behind the band a bit) or pretty little clips for some extra flair. She' doesn't fake-play with her hair, but she can cup her hands behind her head (elbows up, index finger tip resting at the nape) and cute things like that and it doesn't look silly. And...her hair never gets stuck in her lipstick or hooked on a rhinestone on the opposite boob. So I guess that's something. ;-)
