Re: June Diet and Fitness Thread

oy! I just had my baby May 22nd. As soon as my husband takes me to the grocery store Im back on a diet. I wanna loose 25 lbs. Will be following the "eat clean" diet, and logging in on thedailyplate.com. I cant exercise for three more weeks (c-section), and even then Ill probably just stick to walking the baby and easy stuff.

They say 80% of how you look is diet. 10% is exercise and 10% is genetics. Makes sense huh?

Lucky you. I had Jeremiah on April 20th and still can't work out like I would like to. Second c-section, awful recovery. They say it is normal to be like this for a second one. Going to my final appointment (hope it is final ) on Thursday. I was on pain medication for a month. My first c-section was a piece of cake. But, this one ey yi yi... Hopefully, I can get back into a routine soon. But, it probably will be really really slow... which is okay. Summer is here and walking will be fine.

    Congrats on the new baby!

Re: June Diet and Fitness Thread

This is my plan... (from Michael Pollan's "In Defense of Food.")

EAT FOOD. NOT TOO MUCH. MOSTLY PLANTS.

    EAT FOOD…
-Don’t eat anything your great grand mother wouldn’t recognize as food.
-Avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable, c) more than five in number, or that include d) high fructose corn syrup.
-Avoid food products that make health claims.
-Shop the peripheries of the supermarket and stay out of the middle.
-Get out of the supermarket whenever possible (in favor of farmer’s markets).

    NOT TOO MUCH…
-Pay more, eat less (higher quality over quantity).
    -Eat meals (not snacks).
-Do all your eating at a table (desk does not count).
-Don’t get your fuel from the same place as your car does.
    -Try not to eat alone.
-Consult your gut (know when you’re full).
    -Eat slowly.
-Cook and, if you can, plant a garden.

    MOSTLY PLANTS…
    -Eat mostly plants, especially leaves.
-You are what you eat eats too (meaning, if your meat is loaded with antibiotics and its own ancestors, you're eating it, too. So eat clean animals).
-If you have the space, buy a freezer.
    -Eat like an omnivore (biodiversity).
-Eat well-grown food from healthy soils.
-Eat wild foods when you can (weeds, wild game).
-Be the kind of person who takes supplements.
-Eat more like the French. Or the Italians. Or the Japanese. Or the Indians. Or the Greeks.
    -Regard non-traditional foods with skepticism.
-Don’t look for the magic bullet in the traditional diet.
-Have a glass of wine with dinner.

Re: June Diet and Fitness Thread

We should have been eating like crazy out of the garden by now but two weekends ago when I was gone to a dance workshop out of town, the puppy dogs and their mother got into the garden and decimated it. They ate every tomato, every squash, every eggplant, helped themselves to the onions and garlic I had already pulled that were laying out on the soil to dry, and ate almost all the peppers. They left the jalapenos and only ate the Anaheim and Poblano peppers they could reach. Thank goodness those are some tall plants! We put up a 6ft tall run of deer netting and they haven't been able to get back in there yet so now I have some new veggies coming along, thank you very much.

My Forman grill is my friend. Grilled zucchini, grilled eggplant, kabobs with chicken breast, grape tomatoes, pepper and onion. Slice up a sweet potato and throw that on the Forman grill too.

My weight loss has been wierd. Almost no inches lost around the midsection--BAD. But back fat, shoulders, upper arms are smaller--GOOD. But my butt and hips are smaller too so I still look like an inverted triangle, just a slightly narrower one. The dietician at my HMO can't believe that I've lost 27 lbs and my midsection isn't any smaller. But the tape measure doesn't lie. But hey, at least the scale is headed in the right direction.

Re: June Diet and Fitness Thread

I re-started what I call the "breakfast smoothie" lifestyle. I bought a VitaMix about thirteen years ago and did this for about five years before getting lazy -- guess when I started gaining weight? (Yes, that would be eight years ago).

Anyhooo...the smoothie consists of 1/4 cup almonds, a scoop of whey protein, 1/2 orange, 1/2 banana, 1 spear of pineapple, 1/4 cup frozen blueberries, 1/4 cup frozen raspberries and 5 or 6 frozen strawberries. I add about 1/4 cup of juice to blend. It makes about 20 - 24 ounces which I slowly sip whilst nibbling on five or six walnuts. I take a lot of vitamins and fish oil, as well.

Intriguingly, I haven't consciously changed anything else...but have found that I'm naturally eating more healthfully and more reasonable proportions...ah yes, I'm also drinking more water (about 80 oz. a day).

(I've always been an organic food freak, but you can get a lot of organic crap. We started a vegetable garden and the sugar peas are about to come in.)

So I've lost six pounds in eight weeks; people are asking if I'm losing weight and best and most importantly I FEEL GOOD -- joints creaking less, more energy, better endurance. I don't know if the knees will ever stop making that crunchy sound, but at least I can bend them without pain now. I'm even practicing floorwork and popping back up!

Is it the smoothies, the Vitamin D or the Fish Oil? Whatever, it is working and I'm sticking with it.

Congrats to all the weight losses!

I lost weight too, made it below my starting weight before I was pregnant. My back is now smaller, so I had to invest in some new nursing bras. The blouses I made for my postpardum wear, are huge! I have to take them in. Not sure if I am cheating with the breast feeding. I am hoping it is the change of my eating habits that are the real deal this time around. Sometimes I wish I would of eaten 6 small meals before, but you live you learn.

Yes, I remember you had a thread about your diet before. We are following the same one! ..g.: It really does keep the blood sugars down. If it wasn't for this diet I would of been on Insulin during my pregnancy. I just will keep this up so I don't get it again, now that I am at risk times 4. Once the weight is gone, times three.

I commend you for making this lifestyle change. It really isn't easy with what kind of foods are out in the market today.

My uncle past from this 2 years ago. He was only in his 58. My aunt found out she had it around the time of his death. Then, I had the GD. Being a nurse too, I take care of patients with this. Hopefully, there is a cure one day. I am an avid supporter of the ADA. Doing the walk in October.

Made yummy dinner tonight. Chiles rellanos stuffed with brown rice and low fat cream cheese and topped with home made black bean salsa. Most of ingredients came from the garden!

I had smore cookies for bf! ha! No really, if you are breast feeding be careful of deiting (by diet: not getting enough calories)to soon, you risk your babies health, your health, and the risk of lactaion complications. That being said your plan of eatting clean is sound! btw P90X~~~ it will take it off! but it hurts

Re: June Diet and Fitness Thread

Blood sugar problems are back again. On monday I had to eat a tsp full of sugar. I had eaten breakfast about an hour earlier than normal and it wasn't time for my snack but the drop in blood sugar made me so nauseated that I couldn't even look at my morning snack. A little sugar and I was okay again. I am eating oatmeal and cottage cheese for breakfast. May vary that with a protein powder/fruit and yogurt smoothie.

Weighed and measured yesterday too. I've lost two more pounds but the tape measure around the middle isn't budging. My body is gonna hold onto that belly fat as long as possible.

That is why I see the nutritionist. Now they only want me to lose 1lbs. a week. And I have to go back in a month because once I start moving around more forget it. Well, I will be starting the mini pill soon so that will probably slow the weight loss as well.

I heard about the P90X, a male friend of mine who works out all the time and eats right who never loses any weight (sounds like a female issue) is doing great on it.

    Glad you are okay!

Not time for me to weigh myself yet, but with the diet change with increase of calories. Not sure if it will budge the scale this week. Back to dance class next Tuesday, so I am really excited. ..l;,

I know someone who is doing P90X but said it is the physically hardest thing she has done. She has lost weight. One of my nieces, who has OCD, is also doing it and it has turned her into a maniac. She is way too thin. Looks gaunt. Obsesses of her body image, that she is not ripped enough. She is tiny, petite, small frame and has body image issues to begin with.

P90X is the most intense, crazy workout I have ever seen/attempted. I have it and was faithful for a short period of time before the fast-paced-lifestyle took hold and bumped out my routine. My bf and I have a working out bet which begins July 6 and we'll both be 'Bringing It'.

I'm not entirely sure how to word this...

Does one lose inches by working out and lose weight by food plan? I have been wretched about working out as of late so am not losing inches but am still losing pounds. I am happy, of course!, but just wondering why, how it works, I guess? Apologies if this doesn't make a lot of sense; though I've been thinking about this all morning, I can't seem to verbalize my own questions. ..c::

Goodness Maranajla... I am the opposite. Not sure if it is the whole baby thing. But, I keep losing inches and the weight is slow to come off. Maybe everyone is different?

I noticed when I was taking a CPR class last week and my pants were sliding off. But, the scale didn't change when I weighed myself last week. I lost two dress sizes in a matter of a month.

I started exercising last week and I go back to dance class tonight. Very very stoked. So I am hoping that the pounds will catch up. I can't lose to much weight a week, because I am breastfeeding, so I am fine with losing inches first.

I don't think P90X "turned" your niece into a maniac. She most likely had these unfortunate issues to begin with and P90X merely accommodated them easier than other programs.

Anyone can take any exercise or eating habit program to the extreme.

You are right. As I mentioned, she already had OCD just waiting for something to turn her mania into exercise mania!
