    Tummy Trouble

Hi! New to dancing(hence the lack of pic in my gallery. hoping to fill it up soon though) and I'm plus size. How do all of my plus sized sisters work around the bra and belt situ? Its all pretty intimidating to me.

    Pictures for inspiration please!!!

Bra and belts aren't the only costumes out there. There are lovely dresses as well. What is your main concern? If it's to cover the tummy you can always buy a body stocking. Always make sure that the belt and bra are the right cut and proportionate to your body.

Well really my upper arms, love handles and lower tummy.I've had 3 c-sections in 6 years and was already plumpy. Now that area is a disaster. I have started dieting and excercise but have a way to go. I was just wondering what options there are out there..c::

    Leedah,

Welcome to Bhuz and to the middle eastern dance community.

For classes all you need is yoga pants and a tee shirt (well, and a hip scarf too!) You don't have to bare your midriff unless you want to. For performance, most of the time when you are starting out performing it will be with the other members of your class or with a student troupe. The instructor or troupe leader will generally determine what costuming she wants the group to wear. And most of the time for student groups that are just beginning to perform the costuming is pretty simple and easy to adapt to many body shapes.

There is an excellent website for plus-sized dancers, Bellydance for Plus-Sized Women, Belly Dance for Full-Figured Women, and Bellydancing for Big Beautiful Women (BBW) Shira, the webmistress, has included a lot of costuming information and galleries of photos of plus size dancers and their costume choices.

I agree with souzan. I have three plus sized ladies in my students troupe, and my costume guidelines are general enough that they can easily buy or make costumes that they are comfortable in.

Here's a picture from last summer - as you can see, they all look fabulous (including the one in the back row on the left who was about 6 1/2 months pregnant at the time)

    Re: Tummy Trouble

I like doing the body stocking underneath, but I have stretch marks from previous pregnancies. So I wear tops that have a tummy cover, or I have made a lace or net to cover up the scars.

Along with Shira's site, I have used ideas from this link.

    Dina's Bellydance Costume Galleries

When I have the time to scan what I have I will.
