    Hairspray and fine hair?

Lately I've been trying to coax my hair into holding some volume for performances and photo shoots by tipping my head upside down and giving it a spray at the roots. It looks fantastic for five or ten minutes, but ultimately just winds up falling right back down.

I suspect this is because my hair is fine and gets weighed down easily. I've tried using very little spray, but that hasn't worked either. (For the record, I've been using Tresemmé's 24 Hour Volume spray.)

Does anyone have any tips? My hair won't hold itself up -- there must be something that will!

    Have you tried backcombing?

I have BABY fine hair, if I make a ponytail out of it's no bigger around than your finger. ,f::

I wear clip in ponytails a lot, especially if I know I'll be getting sweaty. Nothing I do to my hair can withstand any really rough conditions -- and fake hair always looks fabulous!

Recently I've been experimenting with teasing the roots. It's a look that's in style now, and I really like how it's working for me. I tried using a bump-it, but I don't have enough hair to cover it.

Following Azhia's instructions exactly (she has them up on youtube) I can *finally* tease my hair and it looks good and lasts quite a while! You have to tease a section into a little soft 'nest' at the roots, spray it, then do another section. Then lightly brush the top hair to cover & give another spray. Search youtube for Azhia's clip, it's brililant.

Sister! Same here, even despite the fact that my hair's curly!

I have tried backcombing (Azhia's video is very helpful), but I haven't figured out how to make it work with curls. For the curls to look good, I need to keep them from separating, so it's difficult to work around them with a comb. I'm caught between a rock and a hard place, and, as you can surely tell, I have absolutely no skill with hair. Aren't people with curls supposed to have too much volume? Argh!

Azhia's DVD has excellent instructions on back-combing hair to achieve volume.

    ,r:; Y'allses are the best.

Ainsley, just backcomb at the root, no need to go up into the curl itself. You can also try a product like Aveda's [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Aveda-Pure-Abundance-Hair-Potion/dp/B000O2NKL0"]Potion.[/ame]

For just a little extra body, my hairstylist rubs my scalp/roots of my hair while blow drying. She makes tiny small circles and lifts up back and forth. Probably doesn't make much sense...so um, yeah...

Ainsley, have you tried Bumble and bumble's Curl Conscious for fine curls? It claims to "support soft, fine curls that tend to droop - keep them shapely and resilient (without crunchiness)." I don't think it would do the trick all by itself, but it might be a good supplement to the stuff that others have suggested.

I'm sad, but somewhat comforted, to know that there are other folically challenged people out there. I swear in the next life that I get to come back with a serious mane of hair. This baby-fine stuff is for babies.

bump its - they're very good

also, don't use hair spray - use hair laquer as it is much much stronger, you'll only need a little but it will 'hold'

Azhia: I'll have to experiment some more with backcombing. I tried it again the other night, keeping the comb quite low to the scalp. It did create some volume, but also a lot of frizz. Perhaps practice will make perfect?

Andalee: I don't blow-dry (my curls do better with air-drying), but that's good tip for those who do!

Penguinberry: I think Bumble and Bumble's products are for curl shaping. I have products of this type that I'm happy with -- they do give the curls more bounce and better shape but don't really create volume at the roots where I need it.

Bul Bul Ksa: Hmm... hair lacquer. I've never heard of it, but it sounds promising. Would you recommend any particular brand? Drug store, preferably, so I don't have to spend too much just to try it out.

Absolutely. Make sure you are backcombing very gently, no need to jam the brush down towards the scalp. If you use a backcombing brush (or have a grooming brush; bristles are very close together) you can smooth the curls back into a ruly state.

Yup, just go to your supermarket and buy there....the key is the word lacquer....I bought some today for a few bucks (and it was discounted on top of an already low price)
