    A REALLY safe tan *spinoff*

I just have to share that I really liked the results of my first booth spray tan last week!!! The Versaspa booth came highly recommended over the Mystic Tan system and it was awesome: four passes with the spray, followed by four passes with the dryer and I walked out of the booth completely dry and ready to put on my clothes and leave. THEN for the piece-de-la-resistance: after letting my color develop for a few hours I sprayed down with tan odor neutralizer spray by California Tan, which significantly cut down that icky DHA smell that previously made self-tanners so unbearable for me.

I like being naturally pale most of the time, but for the height of summer I think it looks good to have some color. As a brunette I would normally have some if I didn't cover myself with SPF 30. In terms of time & convenience (hop in & out of a booth, spray down later) this is definitely a beauty treatment that can easily be incorporated into one's regime. Cost was $30.

how long does the spray-tan last?

are there any things to look out for when using this method? (choosing a place to do it etc)

does it rub off on clothes?

i don't know squat about this method ^^

Lasts about a week. You can get it either with bronzer or "clear". If you get the bronzer you will leave the booth with an immediate tan (which washes off) so you don't have to wait for the self-tanner to develop to get color. I don't know if it rubs off on clothing or not. I went with the clear just in case to avoid any messiness. I started seeing color in 2 hours and was fully developed in 6.

Everyone says preparation is the key to a good booth-spray tan and I found that to be the case. Make sure you exfoliate well in the shower before you tan, that way you won't have any patches of dry skin that will soak up extra tanning fluid and create dark blotches. At the same time, don't tan immediately after a shower - the open pores can also "grab" color and give you little pinpoints of darker pigment. Moisturize evenly. Be sure to use the provided barrier cream to cover hands, feet, elbows and other places that you don''t want to take too much color. The salon employees did a good job of explaining how to use the machine to me, plus there were instructions on the wall and the machine itself has an automated voice to guide you through the positions you have to stand in to be sprayed. I wore old, loose-fitting clothes to avoid any rubbing afterwards that might disturb my tan. Those are all the tips I can think of.

Sorry, I don't want to sound picky but I just have to ask as I'm very interested in this topic. How do you know that it's really safe? As I understand it there is as much concern about absorbing chemicals from fake tans as there is over sunbathing.

No, just one place for the spray tan, the odor neutralizer comes in a spray pump bottle. I bought it online through Amazon.

The dangers associated with indoor tanning come from the UVA rays in regular tanning booths. There's no danger from using DHA-based self tanners that I'm aware of. Except you still need to remember to wear sunscreen even when "tan".

I know a little about chemicals used in cosmetic applications, having worked for a while as a chemical sales rep to the cosmetics industry (Mary Kay was one of my clients). DHA is considered a very safe ingredient within the industry. It reacts with the horny layer of the skin and does not penetrate to deeper levels. There are always scaremongers on the web, but I haven't come across anything that seems particularly authoritative.

Be careful. My friend just had this done before her vacation and ended up with hives from an allergic reaction all over her body. It ruined the first three days of her trip.

Make sure you do a test patch first.

Here's the saftey info on DHA...http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ing...ngred06=701979

    "low to moderate hazard"

I worry more about the propellants they put in the spray...

Out of curiosity...do you go naked and does it spray your face?

You're in a private room so yes you can go naked if you don't want tan lines. I did. ..g.: And yes it sprays your face but there's also a vacuum going at the same time which sucks all the mist out of the air so you don't have to worry about breathing it.
