    fairy wings...a long shot....

so I am doing a short performance and bellydance lesson at the Fairy Festival on Sat and I am having difficulty w/ wings....Fairy wings..I found a great tutorial online...but it isnt' working....so I have my wire (16 gauge) and shaped it like a wing...and I cut the pantyhose to go over it....but the problem is the stockings keep pushing the wires back in...I have tried to stretch them out..

so my question is:has anyone ever attempted to make real fairy wings and if so, did you use the panty hose? if so...what am I doing wrong?

I had like 3 days to prepare for this..and have nothing fairyish to wear ..so I am trying to concoct and outfit..I bought all kinds of flowers/stick, ect and made crowns for me and my daughter...and drove all over today looking for white pantyhose....they didnt have queen size....

if I had time..I would start over w/ fabric...but I dont want to spend my whole day tomorrow working on it...LOL

    ugh!

you might try "cutting" the hose, wrapping it around the frame, and gluing down the edges, rather than putting the frame inside the legs. There would be less stress on the wire to bend out of shape.

lots of links to make-your-own wings found here:
(look about 1/2 way down the page, on left side)

interesting..I didn't think to try it that way....

all the instructions I see online do it the same way I did and I can't for the life of me figure out how theirs worked and mine doesnt..I thought the wire wasn't strong enough, so I even tested it on the coat hanger, which is much sturdier and it still bent....

    YES

I did not use stretch fabric, I used chiffon/organza. I first sewed with a zipperfoot and then glued.

I've made wings - but not out of fabric. I used cellophane (like the kind you wrap gift baskets in). I've attached a picture of one side.

Did you wrap the wire in floral tape? If you do this, it will help the frame hold it's shape. Let it harden for about a day and you will have a very sturdy frame to work with.

The tutorial I used for the cellophane wings is here. If you use this tutorial make sure you use the vinyl as backing. She says it's optional but it really helps make it stronger. Faerie Muse | Land of the faeries, and faerie things...

Threadbangers also has a tutorial on making wings out of a wire coat hanger and tights

DIY Fairy Wings HOWTO and BONUS Costume Essential | ThreadBanger - D.I.Y Fashion & Style

I have seen people make wings out of veils. There is a woman on Etsy that makes them, they look pretty easy to make this way.

I'm not sure what 16 guage looks like but for my faerie wings (made by a friend), I'm pretty sure she used a wire clothes hanger. The smaller ones had pantyhose but the other ones (in the picture mine are the giant grey-ish ones) I think are just some sort of stretchy fabric.

Probably not much help, but good luck!

If you end up having time and want to give them "dewdrops", mine have hot glue drops on them and it is really pretty!

Also, if you will be dancing with them, make sure they are either on the small side or you have some way to "anchor" the bottom part. I danced as a faerie for something last year and wore those giant wings. Even when I took a long scarf and attached them the best I could, they would flop around funny and kinda trail behind if I did any spins/turns... They also hit my arms when I move so it kinda limits what you can do.
