How to care for pet hair?

My hair is currently just above shoulder length, and I've been wearing a loooong fake pony lately for audiences who expect more hair...is it just me or do all fake pony tails tangle like they are possessed by evil fairies?

How do I comb/condition hair falls to prevent stretching/breaking/split ends? I hate to think of even inexpensive clip-on pieces as "disposable" - any tips on making them look nice for longer than a handful of performances?

My husband wore a Santa suit (rental) once and the beard/hair was awful. I gently rubbed the synthetic hair beard and wig with a dryer sheet and then used one of the wire pet combs to detangle. Both pieces looked beautiful when I was done. I have no idea if this would work for your hairpieces but you could try on an inexpensive one to see.

I went to a local wig shop and bought some spray in wig conditioner. It adds shines, helps detangle, and reduces static. I also periodically wash the hairpieces with wig shampoo and use a rinse out wig conditioner. All my wigs and hairpieces are synthetic, not natural hair. If you wash the hairpiece, carefully roll it in a towel and then lightly shake it out and let it dry without combing. I use a wide toothed comb when I comb, starting at the ends and working my way up to the top (roots). When I get ready to wear a hairpiece and take it out and shake it lightly, run my fingers through it lightly and then mist with plain water before putting it on. When I take it off I use my fingers to remove any tangles and spray it with the leave in conditioner. Seems to work. Most of my hairpieces are Put On Pieces or Revelon. These were the care instructions that came with them.

What Souzan said. I use Revlon wig care products from Sally. I have a GIGANTIC super-wide tooth comb with rubber tips, it was sold as a shower comb and it's wonderful for detangling. Essential to start at the bottom and work up bit by bit.

The only hairpieces I've ever had to retire were my first VERY cheap one (drugstore brand) and a superduper long one that I left in my suitcase in my car on a hot day. Fake hair melts.

Love to play at Sallys. Last month I discovered Noodleheads products for curly hair and they were having a two Noodleheads for the price of one so I bought one of everything--curl definer, curl refresher, leave in conditioner, rinse out conditioner, frizz stopper, and shampoo for when my hair is really grungey (I am a no 'poo curlygirl devotee!) They have a monthly specials table with great discounts. And the last time I was there I found out I qualified for a seniors discount card for 5 percent off anything I buy. One of the only good things about getting older is the discounts. Which is ironic since seniors are among the most affluent demographic group in the US. But discounts, I'll take 'em!
