    A question about hair accessories

Okay, I'll admit to being jealous of ATS dancers and Fusion dancers who get to wear a variety of super cool and lovely things in their hair. I was watching a duo perform a fusion piece last weekend and one of the dancers had just the most amazing flowers and clips intertwined with a very 40's retro 'do. I know the steam punk thing tends to ruffle some traditionalists feathers but how to I take these feathers ..l;, and stick them in my hair without overwhelming the entire look?

Often times with the glamorous over the top costuming, having over the top hair is a bit too much, but I want flowers, and feathers, and sparkles and cute retro 'dos. Any advice on how to incorporate these looks without looking like a confused creature?

stick a flower or 2 above your ear, or on a barrette that holds your hair partly back. feathers could also work glued on a hair clip. or a decorated headband.
me too i looove the tribal hair! it's fantastic isn't it ^^ i think 'classic' bellydance costumes would look terrible with an over-the-top hairdo, but we can certainly work in some pretties ;)

What about retro looking hair dos? Would the GP not get it? What about Arab audiences? I love tossing my hair and such, but these finger waves and pin-curls are calling my name!

Depends on how retro you want to go, but there are a couple of Emans on the market with a very Old Hollywood feel - bias cut skirts, draping, all that good stuff. Retro hair wouldn't look terribly out of place with a costume like that.

Maybe you could find a softer version of the curls so you channel Veronica Lake rather than a flapper? This would look incredibly hot with a big white silk flower pinned near the ear.

I think Rita Hayworth and Veronica Lake are great retro inspirations for hair, gorgeous curls, then add a flower or sparkly headband:

I've seen Shabnam pull off feathers, so I think it can be done if you do it the right way. Never mind that feathers and ruffles seems to be trends in Egyptian costuming.

Etsy has a whole bunch of beautiful hair accessories, many with feathers. They come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes.

    Search on "hair ornament."

It may need to be a smaller, toned down version, but I think it's totally possible.

Here's what I'm picturing. Take 3 matching silk flowers (or little bundles of flowers) on clips and add some dangly sparkly bits and/or feathers to each one. Clip one on your skirt/belt over one hip, the other to the opposite bra cup (where it joins the strap) and the third in your hair.

A simple elegant Eman could be embellished either with a simple, tone-on-tone decoration OR punched up with contrasting colors and giant flowers. A more ornate costume would have to be carefully balances, it would be ideal if the ornament blended right into the design and then was carried up into the hair.

I actually have an orange Eman knock-off with silk flowers with dangly bits on the skirt and bra, and I've looked for a matching one for my hair. I couldn't find one, so I was thinking of getting three that match and redoing the whole thing so I could bring the motif upward.

I agree with Lauren. I bet you could even "thread" some strands of single sequins or other design right into your hair as well.

Re: A question about hair accessories

A lot of us here have curly and wavy hair. And so do many of the most famous dancers in Egypt. Or else they had wavy and curly hairpieces and wigs!

There are so many things you can do to decorate your hair. Put glitter in it. Sparkly headbands with sequins and beads. I have some feathers on a small hair piece that sticks in my hair. Rhinestone barettes, hair clips, headbands. With the right costume you could make a glitzy dreads hairpiece out of gold and silver ribbons with strings of irridescent plastic pearls.

I have a beautiful headband that came with a fabulous dress. It is totally sequined and has long, long strands of glass fringe hanging off the ends right where earrings would be. Looks great, but if I spin, the fringe whirls around and smacks me in the face. So give your hairpieces a good test ride before performing.

I don't want to threadjack, but I'm curious about those feather fluffy things on Etsy.

Anyone have any good pictures of a half-up, half-down style that incorporates the plumage? I couldn't dance with all of my hair pulled up. I'd feel naked .w.:

I use a tiara and make it a headband(avatar pic) I have fine curly, wavy hair. head bands seem to work and Claires usually has stuff now for proms and they have nice decorative hair clips and stuff and in budget(at least mine)

Me too - especially since I do a lot of hair tossing.

Re: A question about hair accessories

This weekend I'll (hopefully) be putting just some of my hair up into random buns and clipping in some homemade flower clips with bits of feather and a spritz of glitter in them. It's for a gothic fusion piece, but I have a mostly cabaret look (just all black and sparkly), if all goes well I'll post pics. :-)

My friend Lauren is the definition of glam, I didn't think anything was possible with my straight limp hair, but she taught me a few tricks (check out "Good Hair Day" hair pins, they rock).I don't know if I'll be able to pull the hair off, but we'll see...

I've taken to wearing hair flowers or those frou-frou feather things in a matching color - they're fun and help complete my look.
