I will need a red costume in autumn. I want it to be rather simple. Skirt, maybe slightly mermaid or straight, bra, maybe a sleeve.
I am not tanned. My experience with red is: dark red makes you more pale. Bright red is better. It's a colour I wouldn't wear in daylight, though.
About the decoration I am wondering. Some shiny stuff yes, some fringe but not much. I most of the times prefer gold to silver but I find red-gold very christmas-ey. So red-red would be best but- that doesn't sound very exciting...
Do you have advice? Any opinion on red is fine. It won't be the most decorated costume on earth, that's for sure for it'll be me doing everything...
Or maybe I first do the basic parts and then ask you guys?

Red costume advice?
07-01-2009 09:12 AM #2Re: Red costume advice?
I would make sure you don't use anything that is dark red because that would really add to paleness. The costume being red alone is probably enough use of that color. I would add embellishments of silver and/or gold but I also find that using teal beads with silver is a really nice touch.

Re: Red costume advice?
I'm pretty pale, with olive undertones. This is a pharonics in bright red also

zfejzic - that's a really nice red costume. The simplicity and beauty of the color is about all you need, and the enhancements are very supportive of the cut and color itself. And Tanya - I have the same coloring as you! Your costume is gorgeous too!!

Re: Red costume advice?
but then i've also embellished a dark red set that already had silver on it and i added a crap load of black beading/fringe to it and it works well even tho it's a darker shade

but either way, with brighter shades i prefer silver beading.

Re: Red costume advice?
I find red to be an amost universally flattering color, you just can't be afraid to stand out in a crowd. The only people I've seen who have issues wearing red are people with very ruddy complexions. You should go to a regular clothing store and try on a variety of red dresses until you find something you're comfortable in.

Here's another red pharonics. It has mostly gold accents:

Re: Red costume advice?
Oh, wow!
Very professional stuff, all of it beautiful! I must add that my hair is light brown. I think brunettes are a natural match for red, the brighter coloured hair must find their own approach. I like the idea of red and black but I avoid dark accents for I can't answer to it with my own colours.
I adore red and turqoise but due to my dance partner I think I will stay one-coloured.
Oh well, yes, if you have all that professional embellishment, it's always nice.
I tought, if I do little embellishment, maybe then not symmetrical? Or do chains instead of fringe? I thought, maybe a draping in a different fabric but same colour, or same fabric but maybe metallic for a contrast?
Maybe material mix and somehow not symmetrical is what I want. I like the modern Egyptian costuming.

Re: Red costume advice?
Interesting. I'm a fair freckled redhead and I think I look abominable in true red, though I do like myself in burgundy/wine type reds. Could I be wrong? Any redheads out there looking good in red?

Re: Red costume advice?
This is a costume I made for my friend Ahnalya (her in the photo). It was actually black velvet with red sparkles on it. It gave it a molten red look. I used very simple embelleshments with gold sequins and swarovki chain/crystals. It sounds like this is more of what you had in mind.

Re: Red costume advice?
Redhead here, and I totally agree! The rich, deep shades like burgundy and wine work really well with my pale skin and red hair. I actually *like* to rock the paleness--there's no getting rid of it, so I might as well embrace and accentuate it! But the bright reds just clash with my coloring and look hideous.

What if you got one of those lovely L. Rose skirts and u-tops and wore one of these underneath for a bit of bling.

Re: Red costume advice?
I think I've seen a picture of Samira Shuruk in a bright red eman that was gorgeous on her and she's a red head. Maybe she'll post a pic on this thread for you.
I could be wrong, but I also think I've seen a photo of Mahira Michelle in red too.
I think for anyone, picking the right shade of red is important. I made a red costume for another friend, Kalyani, and she needs to wear reds with alot of blue in them.Last edited by shahla; 07-01-2009 at 11:19 AM.

Re: Red costume advice?
Oh exactly, I totally agree with Samira's choice of red (going for contrast). I think for me it'll be less ferrari though...a bit more middle colour.
Sort of orange-red hair might be fine with wine red. I could image a celtic queen like that, but I personally have a strong dislike for this colour. I like bright shades...
well it depends of course when you go to a store and see what's there...

Re: Red costume advice?
I'm very pale, and I have red hair (from henna). I can wear most types of red, but I can't wear pink. Cool colors and jewel tones look best on me, and even though red is a warm color I can still get by with it. It needs to be a cool value of red.
Cadmium red light is an example of warm red:
Naphthol crimson is an example of cool red:
Ignore the swatches on the right - they're paint mixed at 50% tint.

Re: Red costume advice?
Hi Karnak,
you're a redhead and can't wear pink? I remember that one in Desperate Housewives, the merciless housewife with the red hair, she always wore the perfect red hair-colours. Maybe red hair ok: soft lilac-pink. And the Jillina pinkey-snake costume???
On a performance I had two head shawls, one in the warm red you are showing and one in the red below or even a bit darker. I took the warm colour for it looked better on me.
I very much like the costume Leyla is wearing on 0:43. Something like that in red...then it would be a darker red or metallic-gold-red material mix, hmmmm

Re: Red costume advice?
NOT after looking at your Pharaonics

No I want the bra to be largely of fabric. I want a minimalistic costume, so just bra and skirt.
I just did my first own costume and, guess what, it wasn't so difficult at all! The thing is with draping and embellishment, I don't have practice with that.
But yes, hum, the idea is like the Leyla-costume that's in the clip, or maybe without the golden napkin...but that looks good!

Re: Red costume advice?
I see what fabric I can get around here. I think this is step 1. Or else I might order...but then I want to see the colour first.

Re: Red costume advice?
maybe not metallic...maybe just not too red. Like the costumes zfeijzic is showing, but shiny lycra. The tones that tanya and andalee wear, they don't seem the ones for a minimalistic costume.
What do you say about Leyla's napkin-costume? I love the way the golden napkin is draped in a waterfall-fashion over the belly...

Kind of like this:
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EisuqFSeCug&feature]YouTube - Sofia Sarkisyan - Bellydance2/Armenian/[/ame]
That's one of my all time favourites btw. (music and interpretation)
Yes I want a costume like that! The decorations (shiny in the costume colour around bra and hips, a bit in metallic, asymmetrical, minimalistic, yesssss) in red...Maybe a bit bigger skirt so one leg won't be out all the time.

Dark hair, super white skin...majority of my costumes and golds/red/burgundy (picture a couple years old)

I like minimal costumes in the burgundy/wine range with copper or gold accents.Last edited by ozma; 07-02-2009 at 04:19 AM.

But which is the fabric she has on bra and hips? It's with a shiny design on it. Maximum I know about are holospots...

Re: Red costume advice?
Hi Ozma, yes I like the colour of the costume-skirt in the first picture (above). I want it to be shiny, that adds liveliness especially if the skirt is rather straight.
then, like Sofia Sarkisyan: asymmetrical golden decoration, hmm very nice and a simple draping around the hips, but the material must be glitzy, not just shiny, to top the shiny material (metallic lycra or even wet lycra, I wonder) of the skirt...
