Unusual sources of costuming materials: Where have you been?

Today I went to two bead shops, two fabric shops and a Tandy Leather shop.

I learned a lot just by listening to this knowlegeable gent deal with other customers. Then he helped me with leather dye and did you know (kazoogirl) that they have lots and lots of grommeting material??? Hmmmm.

Then I bought some nice little rose medallions that whispered "tribal" to me.

I've heard people mention thrift stores, hardware stores, and what else am I missing? I love trolling around for stuff! Hee

    OOOohhh, I got another star!

SRSLY, my sister-in-law's old Renfaire costume became one of my best cossies...

And some of the decorative materials for my latest set are organic!

cheapie stores. recently they've started making great shirts and dresses with shiny plastic rhinestones completely covering the neckline. you take the stones off and you still have a shirt left over for the price. it's not swarovski but it's usually the deal of the century.

also, garage sales.....you can sometimes find really great appliques or beautiful vintage costume jewelery.

Native American costuming supply places. My local hardware store. A big box of scarves and costume jewelry inherited from my grandma (I think she'd be proud ;-)

Re: Unusual sources of costuming materials: Where have you been?

I'm constantly looking in thrift stores, consignment shops, flea markets and vintage clothing stores and sites. I look at everything, even handbags and shoes, for trims, beading and decorations that could be used on a cossie. So even if something isn't your size, it doesn't matter. If the fabric is fabulous, cut it up and use it!
