Thread: Need fast costume for a teen to wear on stage

I have a young lady who wants to do bellydance for her pageant talent. The choreography is no problem, but we've only got two weeks to get a costume together for her. What can we put together in two weeks that will look good enough for stage, look appropriate for bellydance, and cover well for this high school, family event? The choreography and music is raqs sharqi/AmCab, not tribal, so the costume needs to lean to the glamorous side. Also the less expensive the better, since this may be the only time she ever uses this. She can use my hip scarves, but everything else I have is to going to be too large for her.

Edit: Nevermind what I said about less expensive. I need to consider expensive as well, because they get judged on their costume. It's going to be up to what her mom is willing to pay, but a more blinged out costume is probably going to score her better points.

Hmm, I have a pretty pink costume with a fairy skirt and choli top. I wore it for a summer youth camp and it covers everything. If you look at my gallery, there is a picture of me wearing the costume. I can provide more pictures this evening. For information, I wear a 36C, 28 waist, 36" hips. I'd only ask $60 for the set. Comes with top, matching belt and skirt.

Dahlal has a LOT of Akhet or Minya tops and skirts in stock, they're very glamourous, reasonably affordable, and you can have it in your hands in a day or two. Add a coin belt (I'd prefer that over a hip scarf personally) and I think it's a sleek but reasonably covered look for an older teen. (if we're talking very young teen I'd want a different top).

Grrr, Dahlal it so difficult to link or grab pics, but go to Dahlal Internationale : Welcome! and type 'akhet' into the quick search box, then try the same with 'minya.'

Personally, I prefer the Akhet because the glitter fabric on the Minya causes the skirt hem to cling to itself and the fabric always rolls up.

I LOVE these sets, but the top is an underbust vest, so you still need a costume bra or other kind of top to go underneath it. I'd also be concerned about ship time from India. Even if you pay for some kind of express shipping, items are sometimes held up in customs for weeks and there's nothing you or the seller can do to speed that process.

I've had good experiences with mode mystique as a seller, but it has always taken several weeks to receive the products.

I love those minya and akhet tops for me, but they're too sexy for a 15-16 yr old. And you're right about ordering from India. Thank you for pointing that out. That's why I need to bounce these ideas around with you guys: you'll think of things I don't!

Speaking from a teen perspective here, I really don't think the Minya top is too sexy for a 15-16 year old. The V-neck could always be made a little less deep with a sparkly pin of some kind. A good option would be a skirt that matches, or a circle skirt in a color that matches (Dahlal has some double layer chiffon ones for about 60 dollars) and a hip scarf of some kind and maybe a little flower for her hair. If the V-neck is really too deep, she could always wear a sports bra in a matching color (target has tons of them in lots of colors) underneath it.

What size is she? I have a wrap top and matching gored skirt in red/black gitter knit from Sharifwear. It's kind of a Med/Large. You would need to add a hip scarf or belt and some sparkly jewelry. I wore mine so that my bra showed a bit, but they are not actually designed with that in mind.

edited to add: Mine is the reverse colors from the sharifwear photo, i.e. my top is dark and my skirt is light with dark gores, which I think is actually prettier.

She's fairly tiny. I'm a size 10 and she's significantly smaller than me. I can get her exact measurements later.

And we really don't want any belly showing. This is a very conservative area, and she's more likely to lose points with a costume like that. I'd rather err on the side of caution here and just make sure it's flashy.

I was going to suggest something like a wrap top and matching skirt too... she can always wear them overtop a ballet leotard for coverage.

Oh, yes the beledi dresses are lovely!

I would definately go with the beledi dress for coverage! And if she ever decides to dance again, it is very versatile.

Or even a Gahwazze coat with a skirt/bra.

My daughter, use to wear a dance body stocking under her costumes. Not the SP ones, but the ones from Capezio or Danceskin. Pretty good coverage and it made it easier from her to change from ballet, to oriental, to tap, etc. Even We Love Colors has great products.

Moondance has pretty good prices as well. Not sure how fast shipping is, because I have never ordered from them.

It would be very cute and age-appropriate with a black or red skirt or pants and a sports bra or tank under the top, and the tie closures make it adjustable for a wide range of sizes.

Ooh! Even better: I just remembered that I have a glitter-print Hanan galabeya for a teeny person. It's the one in the middle in this photo:



I'm selling it for a friend who wore it only for this performance. The color is light pink with dark pink glitter. It's been ruched at the hips to take up the length for a five-footer, but that could be let down again if she's taller.
All the dresses in this shot are the same style Hanan, but the light pink one is the glitziest because it has beads and paillettes around the hem. The side slits are sewn closed down to about knee level for modesty. There's a larger version of the same shot in my Photobucket album which might give you more detail -- let me know if you need additional photos or measurements.

Usually, in my daughters classes they all wear the same thing, or something similar. Most of the time it is ordered from a dance catalog vendor.

I think Andalee's turquoise dress is lovely, and the pink sahar, yummy!

I think a sparkly beledi dress would be perfect for such an occasion!
