    Angry Smoke Odor

The costume I wore this weekend currently smells like smoke, and not sweet hookah smoke but dirty ciggy smoke. It smells like someone was smoked a pack in my gig bag. ,m:: When I got home I sprayed it down with fabreze and left it to air out on my terrace. I stashed it in my closet the next day but it still smells, in fact it smells so bad it's making my other costumes smell like smoke. Any suggestions (I need to use this costume again this week so anything long term will have to wait.)

i think there was another thread on this.. dancers suggested filling a plastic container with kitty litter and then a towel? and placing the costume on top, sealing it and in a week or two the smell is gone. i usually have to air the costume out by a window for a while- depending on the amount of smoke soaked in

I feel like the Downy Wrinkle Releaser works better on odors than Febreeze. If you have some handy, you could try it.

Yeah, that's the techinque I normally use but I don't have time this week to do it before I need to wear again. I just don't want to have to smell myself (my costume) when I perform again in it, allthough if I'm dancing in another hookah bar it probably won't matter ..l;,

Have you tried spritzing it with Vodka? It evaporates in the same effect as Febreze without leaving the perfumes

    Re: Smoke Odor

To get out the ciggy odor, I combat smoke with smoke.

I air out my costume the very night I wear it. Take it out of my bag, lay it near an open window, or fan. Then the next day I take two chairs and drape the costume over them, along w/ my veil, bra and whatever else, and light some incense sticks under it. I drape it so that it creates a canopy over the incense and around the sides so that it traps the smoke inside the canopy.

You have to make sure, that the costume is far enough away from the incense so that it doesn't burn... but close enough that the smoke can permeate the fabric. Watch it closely and let it smoke for about a half hour.... when you are done your costume should smell like the incense and not the ciggys. I do this a lot and it works well.

    Re: Smoke Odor

i feel your pain Tanya. The only thing that works with my costumes is air them out for as long as possible. Don't put stinky back in the closet until you have to actually wear it. I wouldn't febreeze it until the very last day because i've noticed that somehow, the sweetness of the fabric refresher combines with the cig smell to create an unbearable odor. it's weird.

if all else fails, spritz body mist perfume onto it before you wear it.

half the time, my apartment is completely draped in costumes that need to air out after an especially smoky weekend. it drives my husband crazy. :-)

again, these are just short term solutions. a good soak in gentle soap and water will help in the long run.

Coffee grounds neutralizes smells. My friend works at perfume mania store and it works wonders even with smoke smell.

It's a bit expensive but there is a Lotus machine that makes normal water into a great cleaning agent...Chemical Free!!

I bought one and use it often...best thing ever to get the scent out!! Also good for cleaning, food santizing...etc...

I wish (cause this costume needs it) but it's a Raqia and even though she makes beautiful costumes they stones need to be reinforces and I don't want to tempt fate.

I spritzed it with vodka and let it sit on my patio (it seems to be better now) but I'll remember all these hints in the future, thanks ladies

I am the laziest person on the planet...

I put my skirt in a pillow case tie a knot in the pillow case so the costume can't move, and I put it in the washing machine at hand wash cycle for 15-30 minutes... lay them down flat to dry. It is amazing! Even the rhinestones are shinier after! It works for me...
