Thread: hemming Melodias???

Anyone ever hemmed their Melodias successfully? I just got a pair that I absolutely LOVE, but they are about 2 inches too long.

How can I hem these pants without losing the awesome flair hemline at the bottom? Is it possible?

Also . . . how long should they be? I know they typically drag the floor a little . . . but mine are a little much and I trip on them. But I don't want them to look high water either.

Please share your successes / failures with hemming Melodias Pants.

I know people who have simply cut theirs and not hemmed them afterward. They say they don't fray. I remember reading (maybe at the Melodia tribe) about someone who took them up at the knee instead of at the bottom, because they were the type with a a pattern at the bottom, and she didn't want to lose that.

I just cut mine, they have not fraied as of yet.

I have two pairs on the "to do" stack. I inspected how they are finished, and I think that a conventional rolled hem on the serger will be fine.

My plan (if I ever get the hang of doing a rolled hem with my serger) is to cut an inch - try them for a while, and then possibly cut another inch, etc. and hem when I am satisfied.

Thanks! These are good ideas. Mine are pin stripe, so I would have to cut off the bottom. The material is different too. Not cotton. Kinda like swim suit material . . . . I wonder if that would fray?

The only problem with cutting off the bottom is that you lose alot of the wonderfull width and the tail(?) part - it changes the look a bit - so the idea of doing it just a bit at a time sounds like a better way to me.

Yeah . . . that is what I was afraid of. My mother is helping me with this. She is thinking of cutting from the inside only and tapering it out so that we don't actually cut ANY of the outsides of the hem. Does that make since? It's really just the insides that I step and trip over. Do you think that would work?

BTW I ruined my first Melodias by cutting off the bottom 2 or 3 inches - I was able to sell them to another dancer who actually loved that they weren't as wide as the usual. Everyone likes different things.

Make a horizontal tuck above the knee to take up the extra fabric.

I have cut lycra pants from Sharifwear and there's no fraying even after 6-7 washes. As a rule of thumb, synthetics will not fray as much as natural fibers, knits will not fray as much as woven fabrics.
