Crowns - where to get?
I would really like a crown to go with costumes, to hold my hair back but also stay in place without being too heavy.
Any recommendations?

Re: Crowns - where to get?
you can go to Michaels,Hobby Lobby or Joannes and go to bridal store section and get a tiara or crown. Lucy from Scheherazade imports sometimes sells them on occasion. I hope this helps.

Re: Crowns - where to get?
Thanks Alrana, I ought to have said that ideally not looking for a metal one as in bridal or pageant tiaras or crowns as they hurt me :-( Looking for stiff kind that is like on a hairband, with sparkles...

Oh, then try stores like Claires the Icing one of them teenage accessory stores. Has plain solid colored ones , to match color of costume you could decorate it can be
a thrifty alternative is You could still go to craft store buy some sparkle gems, ribbon or stringed sequins and gem-tac glue or hot glue gun low setting and put the glitz on yourself, so you can have it as shiny as you like.
Scheherazade Imports has the ones from Egypt is that type you are looking for? I always called them "lucy crowns" because Lucy of Cairo used to wear them in the early 90's with her costumes. they look stunning on stage, but the down side the color will be always off from your costume. I find those hurt my head unless I sew elastic then secure with bobby pins on bottom to hold in place.
Or am I just not getting it right today

Yes, maybe I DO mean a Lucy crown :-) Thanks for that, wouldn't have thought of trying the accessories for girls, but great idea and I can always modify! Thanks Alrana

Thanks Ana. Yours is exactly the kind of crown I am after but unfortunately the black won't go with any costume I own otherwise I'd snap it up. Heading off to hobby craft today!

Re: Crowns - where to get?
I love, love love fun headpieces. The ones I've found, though, are usually kind of crappy quality (ugly cloudy plastic gems, weak beadwork) and need some work. Still, they make a nice base to start with if you're handy. The ones I've seen are sort of a hybrid between being a headband and a stand-up crown
You can get them here:
Belly dancing Head Sets of Head Piece and Choker
or sometimes in the accessories section of bellydancestore.biz

Re: Crowns - where to get?
Just checked Wholesale Belly Dance and Egyptian Products Headpieces, Crowns, & Candelabra
They have 5 different styles of standup, sequinned Lucy crowns for $22.75 each.
They're a wholesaler with a $200 minimum order, though. I'm not a big fan of a lot of their costumes styles, but their fringe is magnificent, shiny & sturdy.

Re: Crowns - where to get?
I once made one out of very thin cardboard. I wish I had pictures! I traced the shape, covered it with gold fabric, glued on some sequins, and then sewed on elastic to hold it on my head, just like a headband. These days, I'd use buckram instead of card.
It also occurs to me that those crowns seem to crop up in Russian folk costumes, so you may be able to find a source through that avenue.

I want to share this pattern, that I've been having in my computer for ages, so here it is:

You can change and modify the shape of the design to you own. Have fun!
(I love those style of tiara, might try it myself sooner or latter!)
