Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
Last night, I confessed my undying love for post-gig Taco Bell on Twitter/Facebook and a slew of dancers responded with their post-gig Diet of the Champions. Most were rather decadent and unhealthy, such as Dairy Queen and chocolate martinis.
I like Taco Bell because it's quick, cheap, filling and protein-rich (as long as you avoid the Mystery Meat and get vegetarian beans and cheese), and the drive throughs are always open into the wee hours of the night, even when the clubs close.
What are your favorite munchies after a long, hard gig? Do you eat healthy or do you splurge? Tell me the good, the bad, the artery-clogging - don't worry, I won't judge! ..l;,

LOLOL!! It must be something about CT because I used to hit Taco Bell on the way home from gigs or a late night of classes too!!! Do you stop in the one in Danbury? That was always a good rest stop driving back from Rak East!!
Now I'm pretty boring... I stock my car with Balance Bars and water. I must be getting old...

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
...someone has a Dairy Queen open after gigs? I am SO SO jealous!
I've taken to packing snacks to have with me on multi-gig nights. Sometimes I might have hommous or something at a venue if I have time between, sometimes I have a Power Bar ... or a Good Humor chocolate eclair ice cream bar (uh...that's not packed in my gig bag. lol. That's a stop at a convenience store).
The one venue that has a Taco Bell near it- I used to get a bean burrito (and lemonade) afterward, but now I stay till closing... it's usually just too late for a bean burrito at 2:45am. I choose live music, dancing and debka over Taco Bell anyday. ..l;,

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
Dude, Connecticut is like Taco Bell Central! I've never seen such a dense concentration of that chain in any of the great 50 states...not that I've been to all 50 states
...but we do have a lot of Taco Bells. And Dunkin Donuts, for that matter!
Yes, the one in Danbury is my "go-to" destination! In fact....I was just there last night
Protein bars are a good fix if you're not within a close radius of the beany, cheesy stuff...

Ha! The person who responded Dairy Queen lives in NYC - and you know New York is on a different level of hipness than the podunk locales most of us live at. My small-town CT Dairy Queen closes at like, 9:00. Just like everything else in my sleepy town, anyway ,r:;
If we had venues with live music, dancing and debke, I'd blow off my burritos for that. Alas, until that day comes, beans and cheese will be my sole source of comfort after gigs.
That, and occasionally making my boyfriend my backrub b*tch ..l;,

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
3 words: STEAK AND SHAKE! Open 24 hours, baby, AND it has a drive through! There is a Steak and Shake dangerously close to the hookah lounge where I do my late night Friday/Saturday gigs (11:00PM-1:00AM), and I'll admit that I *may* have stopped there on a few occasions to indulge in chocolate shakes and/or cheese fries. I guess my excuse was always that, by the time I pulled up to the Steak and Shake drive thru window, I had been belly dancing since 7:30 that evening, and hadn't eaten since lunchtime (to avoid feeling queasy during those abdominal undulations!) Hey, a girl's gotta eat, right? ;)
This thread made me smile! Thank you for this :)

Last night I deviated from the norm (regular tacos from Taco Hell) and had a jalapeno cheeseburger from Sonic. Tots, yum!

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
I've eaten hummus or baba ganoush in my car on the way from one gig to another before.
When I used to dance really late at a place that didnt' offer food as part of the compensation package, I used to go to an all-night diner for a full-out feast! With sparkly makeup and false eyelashes and paid with a stack of sweaty $1 bills. I *know* what they thought I did for a living!
Now I dance pretty early, at a restaurant where a great dinner is part of my pay. I usually bring it home in a box and eat that after my gig.

I'm very boring because of my dietary restrictions. I always pack my own food and my favorite late-night snack is thick Greek yogurt and fresh fruit. Yum.

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
I've been known to hit the Taco Smell. Bojangles is nice if you can get there before 10...but that rarely happens. I also pack kashi, clif or luna bars, just in case.
07-26-2009 12:18 PM #11Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
That sounds delish!
No one has yet copped to eating frozen pizza, so I will - the cheap Totino's kind, sometimes with extra toppings - olives, fresh spinach, extra cheese, jalapenos...
When I'm being good I'll eat a home made garden salad and albacore tuna or a tin of kipper snacks (herring)...or cereal. I LOVE cereal in the middle of the night.

This thread is making me so flippin' hungry!
Lauren, I like where you're going with the diner thing.
Next time I'm gigging on the western part of the state, I'm gonna make sure to remember to skip right over the border to the Eveready Diner in Carmel, NY. Stellar mac and cheese, featured on the Food Network, AND college memories! (The one in Hyde Park was my favorite undergrad late-night haunt).
Steak & Shake? Don't know what that is, but I could eat a big juicy steak after I "shake!"
07-26-2009 12:19 PM #13Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
Oh, and I have been known to eat french fries dipped in hummus between gigs when I'm starving. Fat, carbs, protein, and salt - quite possibly the world's most perfect power food!

Mmm... totinos! A flavor from my childhood. Like fresh cardboard with ketchup on top. I crave it sometimes.

Totino's pizza rolls were the bomb, especially when watching Ren & Stimpy ..l;,
I wonder if they still make them!

I think Dima drew it, way back in The Day she contributed a lot of special smileys, including the one of Zorba and the 3am zill brigade. The farty one had to be included because for a long time Jes was making daily fart references.

Well, when I am in a hurry, Jack in the Box with a nod towards being healthy by eating something with Chicken.
But when I am trying to be healthy, I will bring a small cooler full of healthy munches. Doesn' always mean that I will EAT what is in the lunch box!

To all of you who live in a town with a Steak and Shake You are SOOOOO lucky you don't know how good you have it.
So in New Orleans the place I liked to go eat after gigging is Angelli's on Decatur. Pizza & yummy salads. . In Portland it's the Pesto Mac with Cajun-ized Chicken at the Montage.

We have Steak & Shake here, but if a midnight burger is on the menu I really prefer Whataburger (but I believe that is a Texas chain - I don't know if they exist outside of the Lone Star State)...now THAT is what a fast food burger is supposed to taste like - and they are open all night!
Oh and if you want an example of WRONG food that I love late-night - sometimes I get the tacos from Jack in the Box!

Where my fried chicken sistas at???
Give me some post-gig Popeye's or Church's chicken ANYTIME (although I will make do with a bacon double-cheeseburger at Burger King if there's no chicken around!)

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
When I used to dance in restaurants of course I got my food there. There was a Moroccan restaurant with such good food I even accepted the low rate that they paid just for the food :-)
At bigger parties there's often the possibility to rob the dessert buffet after the guests have had their share. THIS is my favourite Post-Gig Eat!!!
Last night I eat the left-over fried rice that I had bought before the gig in the car on my drive home... Good luck it was sticky rice...

My girlies and I go to Denny's and eat junky food. Generally there is ice cream, fried eggs, pancakes, fried appetizers, and cheeseburgers getting mixed in all kinds of strange combinations.

Mmmmmmmmmm, fried chicken!
FYI, since you're the new kid in town - we don't have Popeye's in Connecticut (at least not to the best of my knowledge - I've never seen 'em in Fairfield County, anyway), but we do have plenty of KFC's ..g.:

Re: Just for Fun: The "Good Post-Gig Eats" Thread!
Usually I'll have food from the venue, if its offered, or pick up a lentil soup or something. If I am finishing really late, I really try to keep it light unless I'm starving. Last night I got home at about 2am and snacked on a peach, a few walnuts and some feta cheese. That's if I'm on my own though. I have been known to bean dip, mac and cheese or pierogis in the middle of the night with my dancer friends. :)
