Re: What material should I use for saris/sarees?

Why don't you buy actual saris? If you go on e-bay you can get some which are rather inexpensive. They are also easy to drape. I wear them all the time and would be happy to help you figure it out!

I may also have instructions on how to make what are called automatic saris, which basically drape them and sew them into place so all the wearer has to do is the hooks!

Oh, and guests shouldn't wear red as that is the colour which the bride wears.

size really shouldn't be an issue. I have a good friend who is about a size 22 who wears them all the time. They are simply 6 yards of fabric.

This is lovely and about $60. It includes a blouse piece which is important. And they offer stitching for a very reasonable price.

Keep checking. You are bound to find something.

Re: What material should I use for saris/sarees?

Are you having an Indian theme for your wedding? Saris are definitely Indian, rather than Middle Eastern, but they are absolutely gorgeous.

To make one, you will need 6 yards of fabric, with a minimum 36" width (if you have taller ladies it will need to be wider to allow for the folding/tucking). Sometimes chiffon is not recommended because of the sheerness and slipperiness factors, but it can work depending on the specific fabric. To wear a sari you also need an underskirt in a complementary color and a choli top to match.

There are a lot of great resources online to order saris that aren't expensive and many will also sell the underskirts and can either make a matching choli or sell you solid color cholis as well.

    Good luck!

They are called and worn differently in other countries. I figured I could get what I was looking for by using the word sari/saree.

Not looking to wear what they wear in India with their choli and underskirt. Mostly, I have seen them in the Bride Show of Dubai worn over a dress and know a couple of people who are from the Middle East you showed me pictures of their weddings. Totally, different. And if anyone decides to go this route I will give them this information. We are trying to have fun, no be politically correct.

    Thanks for the info though.
Do you know what they are called in Dubai? Without a choli and underskirt, they would be a pretty different garment. I've seen wrapped garments in the gulf region, but hadn't connected them to saris. I'd be interested in more on the names they go by in Dubai or the gulf and how they differ from an actual sari. It sounds like the advice on saris everyone has might not translate for you to a different style of garment.

*woah woah* What's up? You asked specifically about saris so I offered info about them and then you mentioned you aren't looking for actual saris, but a different garment from the gulf region, so I asked if you had the name of that type of garment if you knew it to see if I could help with anything there.

No one has judged you or been rude. It is easier to help if we are all on the same page for what you are asking. The info we can give you regarding saris may not be accurate for another type of garment - that's all.

Yeah, I know I suck. Sorry about that. ..cr.:

My mother drives me coocoo with all the politics, since she is always saying yadda yadda yadda. ,r:; You aren't ME/Indian. She said it will take her awhile to grasp.

I didn't read in between the lines and I apologize on my rudeness. Thank you for you education on the fact, because I changed my wedding theme to ME/Indian/America so people don't get confused. .w.:

No worries! Did you see the awesome dresses on the other thread about weddings? I think they might have been Moroccan or Tunisian? Very bd-like but might not be as flowing as you are looking for :) Weddings are always stressful - don't give it another thought ..g.:

I did, Estha is making my dress for me. No way could I pull off the stomach showing! lmao!

Trying to figure out a way to wrap a sari over a dress... My friends are wearing the whole get up, while some are not.

Do you have Facebook or Myspace and you can see what is on there!
