    Wearing galabeya for melaya leff

    Hi guys,

I'm thinking of doing a melaya routine for a big workshop show that's coming up. I don't have a typical frilly dress costume, but I DO have a slinky lycra galabeya that's rainbow holographic (from the lovely Azhia). What if I make some sort of ruffle-y hip scarf? Is that OK costuming for a workshop show?

I know it's pseudo-folkloric and Egyptian dancers often perform in galabeya but just want to make sure that, for my one-off solo (not in the middle of a routine) it wouldn't look weird. Thanks!!!

And if anyone's selling a mulitcolor paillette melaya, let me know ..g.:

I always think of melaya done in a galabeya as 'Cairo-Style' melaya, rather than 'Alexandrian,' but I can't tell you where I got that.

I've seen plenty of dancers do melaya leff in galabeya, and while it was in the middle of the routine, they intentionally changed *into* the galabeya for that number. Including Fifi, Soraya (IIRC) and Dandash. So I'm certain that it's A-OK.

This is the kind of gelabeya Fifi has worn for meleya.

Several of my friends do meleya in a galabeye, bth the more traditional galabeyas and the underbust glitzy style. Bahayyia's is actually bright orange leopard print! ;)

I think the galabeya is appropriate . . . methinks the frilly short dress was just an invention for stage anyway! And I never liked it on me, hehe, so I used a more galabeya style or a frou-frou long dress (big fluffy sleeves with a fluffy hem to match kind of dress).

And, sorry, I am not selling my multi-colored paillette melaya . . . never know when I will decide to use it again ;).
