    Thumbs up Kettlebells!

I've just got a nifty little dvd with 5x10 minute kettlebell routines on it....love it. It isn't a hardcore muscle workout (you could always add more weight) but you do get a sweat on and you can feel the burn especially in the legs.

Loving it. I guess for now it's a novelty but it makes a nice change from regular circuit type programmes.

I love them! I've been participating in a new program at my gym using kettlebells and huge ropes. It's a really different workout, but the results are amazing.

I'm sorry, but all I can think of is Will Ferrell in SNL: "More cowbell!"

Will do Sabrina. I think it would be handy to learn some of the basic moves for when people are travelling so they can train in their room and I'm all for getting the most out of a workout in the minimum amount of time.

    'cowbell'..g.:

Well, if I ever branch into the realm of improbable fusion, you know what percussive instrument I plan on incorporating into my act! .w.:

I understand that the kettlebell workouts are good, but that good form is extremely important to avoid injury. Is that right? Did you have a hard time picking it up (so to speak)?

I've been working either with a trainer or a small group. It really helps to have someone help you with form for at least the first few workouts. But I have never done anything that works/strengthens my obliques or lower back like this does. It's also not something I'd recommend for a newcomer to the gym to try right off the bat since the weights require more stabilization than dumbbells.

    Hi Tiger,
I think if you've used free weights before you're going to be at an advantage, especially 'power' moves like wide leg squats, clean & press. If you're pretty good at watching the form of others and self adjusting then you shouldn't have too many problems.

If in doubt then I'd advise to work with a trainer like jchance has said.

If people want to try to recreate some of the feeling try this, dumbell in right hand in front of shoulder, feet wider than shoulder width, low squat, come up by driving the weight through the heels and press the dumbell up to a shoulder press (military press), lower weight & squat, repeat. The movement should be strong, controlled and fluid.

Great all body exercise, by having the weight in one hand your core is especially engaged as it works to keep you stable. Because of their shape kettlebells need more work to keep stable. More muscles fibres engaged the better.

My lower back is my weak spot and I've been feeling a good burn back there..g.: it was always the area to fatigue first when I used to do heavy squats.
