Thread: Cortisone / Epidural = weight gain?

Soooo . . . .

On Monday I am getting an injection for my back and leg nerve pain. I'm not sure exactly what he is doing, but he mentioned something about an epidural and cortisone.

My question is this: I have heard people say that cortisone injections cause weight gain. Is this true? I hope not ..c::. But if it is, what can I do to prevent the weight gain?

Are their other side effects to these injections? I know these are q's for my dr., but I just didn't think of everything while I was there.

Any info. / advice / sharing of your experiences would be appreciated!

Oh . . . and in case you are wondering. I have like 3 disks in my low back that have almost "dried up". 2 disks are "bulging" and one is herniated. ..c:: Yeah . . . so, be sure you guys tighten that tummy and keep good posture when doing your back bendy stuff..p::

I would say from a nursing stand point drink plenty of water, eat plenty of protein, and eat nutritionally watching your caloric intake.

Usually, this side effects happen to patients who use it for long periods of time. Not sure how long you plan on using this. I would call you doctor about side effects, because when used for a long period of time, you need to know what to and what not to eat.

Thanks. I think he is just doing one injection and hoping that's all I need. Although he said he could give me up to 3 within a 6 month period if need be.

i remember from back in my ballet days that several ballerinas did gain weight after cortisone shots. I don't remember the exact scientific reason.

i would be careful about what i eat. just in case try to stay away from unhealthy carbs. use your common sense.

a side note i just thought of - when a person is getting any kind of treatment on an injury, they often forget to exercise. Try to keep active as much as possible.
