Need a new mascara, no thanks to animal testing :(
Anyone recomend a really ace mascara from a brand that doesnt test on animals?
My favorite for years has been 1000calorie by max factor but Ive read they test on animals. Boo!! I prefer one with a curved brush. Lancome has one but they test on animals also....
I like boujouris(?) I think thats the name. I dont know if they test and it doesnt have a curved brush.
Good news MAC doesnt test but are their mascaras any good???
Also I just found out Pantene test on animals. I was shocked about that. Oh well it does a crap job anyway. Ive decided to use Alchemy shampoo and conditioner.
I was also shocked that Covergirl and mabelline test on animals. Its a shame because I really like Drew Barrymore and Queen Latifa and they are the face of the brand....

I've been using Smashbox and really enjoy their products, they are a cruelty free company. The mascara that I have dosen't have a curved brush but they may have another that does. Hope this helps :Ahappy:

It seems to me that companies that don't animal test essentially just wait around for other company's animal testing results before using the same ingredients?

Ecco Bella does not test on animals. It's a bit pricey though.

I don't have an exact brand for you. Because, I am still working on searching myself. I use to like Avon, but for some reason is not working well anymore.
But, I found this that has a ton of non-animal tester makeup vendors.

I have to agree with Sedonia - many companies that want to keep the "no animal testing"-face either have the testing done by their very well hidden subsidiaries or they just purchase the results/tested ingredients elsewhere. So in order to find a real product you have to do a lot of research.
Now, as for MAC mascaras - I've been using their waterproof one daily for well over a year now and I love it because it actually stays on the lashes and does not go wondering off my face like many other brands do. The brush is the regular straight one though.

You can see unbiased reviews of any brands you are interested here:
Makeupalley - Street Smart Beauty - Homepage
I LOVE that site, check most of my potential purchases there and review regularly also. Many of my favourite products have been found by browsing their top picks.
If there is a particular brush you have that you like, you can clean it and use with another brand's mascara formulation. It is a bit of a faff, but might be worth considering.
Re Mac, I have their plushlash and am unimpressed. Some people like their zoom lash (including Kim Kardashian, whose makeup I really like). Re Body Shop, they do mascara, but I haven't tried it.

MUA is a good site if you're looking for product feedback & reviews.
Non-animal testing brands I have tried and liked, specifically makeup, I'll keep it short-ish.

Re: Need a new mascara, no thanks to animal testing :(
Max Factor, Pantene and Cover Girl are all manufactured by Proctor and Gamble, a company who has always tested on animals, and likely always will- if only because they are so massive. (I imagine the cost to cease and desist doesn't make much business sense.) The 'Explore Our Brands' drop down menu on this page will show the companies under their umbrella: New Products - Get Product Updates - P&G Everyday Solutions. Just an FYI!

AAVS also puts out a shopping list of companies who test and do not test or do minimal amounts of testing. Theirs is a very stringent standard, you might want to check them out...

It depends on how far a person wishes to take this as The Body Shop doesn't test on animals, but its parent company, L'oreal, does.

Very true, and even though the body shop doesn't test on animals they do use animal derived ingredients in their products. It depends on how far a person wishes to take this as The Body Shop doesn't test on animals, but its parent company, L'oreal, does.

Re: Need a new mascara, no thanks to animal testing :(
Some companies may do this, especially the bigger name brands, but I certainly don't think it is the majority. The Body Shop is an example, if you read their labels they say things like "The final product was not tested on animals" which leaves the door open for testing the constituent ingredients on animals. I definitely agree that you have to be very careful who you buy from. There are several companies out there who are true to the cause of not participating in animal testing in any way. Beauty Without Cruelty is an example. Many vegan mascaras (and other products as well) also contain more natural ingredients. For example here is SunCoat's mascara ingredient list "Aqua (water), sugar-based biopolymers, kaolin clay, soya lecithin" and Ecco Bella's "purified water, carnauba wax, palmitic acid (from palm oil), clay, methylparaben, propylparaben, iron oxide"many companies that want to keep the "no animal testing"-face either have the testing done by their very well hidden subsidiaries or they just purchase the results/tested ingredients elsewhere. So in order to find a real product you have to do a lot of research.

Re: Need a new mascara, no thanks to animal testing :(
Hey guys, thanks for all your sugestions and links. A wealth of information there. I was so clueless about parent companys and such!!! Its all a bit confusing. I ordered one called miessence. Its supposed to be natural and cruelty free. Decided to go natural aswell after reading about chemicals and stuff. So much to think about. I will test it and report back.

Re: Need a new mascara, no thanks to animal testing :(
Looks like neither the finished product not its ingredients are tested. According to Hauschka's website:
Dr.Hauschka Skin Care opposes animal testing. We do not perform animal testing nor do we use ingredients that have been tested on animals. Dr.Hauschka Skin Care products comply with guidelines regarding animal testing set forth by both PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and the BDIH (German Federation of Natural Products Manufacturers). Details on these guidelines may be accessed online at: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA): The animal rights organization and Kontrollierte Naturkosmetik
OT, but I remember learning in Hauschka skincare training how they're so meticulous about their rose absolute oil, they'll throw out any rose petals that are bruised or blemished. And they only harvest their roses at night.
Their skincare breaks me out like nobody's business, but it's an intriguing company and many people have great results with it!
