Shelf life of unopened hair dye?
Hi all!
I'm doing some housecleaning today, and I discovered I have a problem: I often buy hair color and then put it up and forget about it...sometimes for a long time. I've just discovered four boxes of hair color which may be at least several months to a year or so old. Do these products "go bad" if they are unopened? Should I throw them out and start over?
I hate to waste the money I spent on these!

The boxes *should* have an expiration date; if not, call the 800 number and perhaps the operator can tell you the ex date. You can also throw them away and start all over, marking the purchase date on the new boxes.

Okay, so I called - they are good for three years. There is a lot code on the developer bottle, and she helped me to determine...that every single box had expired.
*sigh*
I have one bottle I bought about a month ago and haven't used yet - guess I'd better get on it before 3 years goes by!
So Sean, what you've learned is that I buy a lot of hair color, but I only get around to coloring my hair about once or twice a year - hence the reason why I never make a drastic change.
Sheesh, I'm so disgusted with myself - that's probably close to $50 I've wasted over the last four to five years.

And yet now you don't have to spend $50 on a wig bc your hair fell out! :egy: ,r:;
I do understand the frustration~ I've done this myself a few times... *cough*

you can also tell if it is bad it will no longer be clear it will look muddy or
dark in color , always keep it stored in a cool dark place this will help with the shelve life . that is why it is in a brown bottle .
