Thread: Running dye!

Okay, so this particular laundering disaster doesn't concern a costuming piece, but, since I've had the problem with a dance skirt as well, I thought I would go ahead and ask the question in this forum.

I have a new cotton dress in cream and blue. I opted to hand wash it, wanting to treat the fabric carefully, and in the process some of the blue dye ran onto the cream fabric. I tried rinsing it, and the blue dye did mostly come out, but I'm having trouble a) getting all it out and b) preventing it from running again.

My question is: what should I do now? The dress is machine washable, so I'm tempted to throw it in the machine (unfortunately a top-loader) to see if that loosens up the dye better than I can by hand. If I do that, should I throw in other dark clothes with it as a buffer (and hope that they don't run)? Would any particular soap product help? I have Tide, Woolite, and OxiClean lying around, but I admittedly don't really understand the differences between them.

I've already called the manufacturer regarding the issue. They say they will refund me if I send the dress back (it's out of stock so they can't replace it), but I love it and would really prefer to keep it. Any help would be appreciated!

I use ColorCatcher sheets when I wash clothes I think may run. This may or may not work for you since you already have some blue that's bled into the white.
