does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
A few questions about skirts because I can't seem to find much variety on the island..
1) Are cotton tiered skirts still out there somewhere? Not the big tribal dance skirts but just a simple (NOT broomstick i hate those) tiered skirt ..usually ombre dyed
How much do you pay for one and where do you find them? Any online sources? Macy's had a few but they were priced at $50
2) Is it me or do sarongs just suck? There's hardly enough fabric to wrap around a curvy butt. The standard size here in hawaii for the rayon ones is 72 inches. Would you wear a sarong more often if:
a) it was longer (by means of wrapping it..if so how long)
b) if it had a better way of tie-ing it on? (i despise having a thick knot at my waist but I do have a cotton sarong I got on big island, and it has ties in it more like a wrap skirt..and it stays on better
3) do you guys have just as much trouble finding tops that match your skirts? i'll find a lovely skirt then get stuck wearing a white or black top because i can never find the right shade to match
ps if you are in Hawaii, Local Fever is having a sale on long dresses for $10 each.
are long dresses popular right now on the mainland or is this an island thing?

Re: does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
I can't answer about tiered skirts,
but yes, I would definitely wear a sarong more often if it was longer and had a better way of tying on, I hate those big knots, too. I wear a sarong enough as it is but do sometimes get irritated because it doesn't wrap around me as well cause of my booty.
AND, yes maxi-dress are popular here in TN this past summer, I bought myself a very lovely one from BodyCentral.com and got tons of compliments on it.

Boston Proper has nice ones around January through the summer. There skirts can be over $100 sometimes. They might not have any left, but you might be lucky they already have their fall items out, so all of the skirts that are left should be on sale. Their items seem to go very quickly even thought their prices are pretty steep. So if you see it you better grab it, while it is there. They have an outlet, but usually you know how it is, usually the things that didn't sell are on there.
Here is another...
Soft Surroundings
2) I don't wear sarongs so I definitely couldn't help you there. Just not my thing. I don't know, they are just uncomfortable IMO for me. I would rather wear a cover up sheer blouse or dress over my suit.
3) do you guys have just as much trouble finding tops that match your skirts? i'll find a lovely skirt then get stuck wearing a white or black top because i can never find the right shade to match
No I usually am pretty lucky when it comes to this. Usually the places I buy skirts from have tops in tons of colors, so I luck out.

I guess they are. I just bought some at Old Navy on clearance. Last year they had a ton on Melrose and I have one from a boutique. If you ever go to CA again, Melrose has some really nice things from inexpensive to well really expensive. ..l;, Some people don't like them because they look like maternity wear. IMO, I just had a baby, and well it isn't the same as maternity wear.Last edited by bdaddiction; 08-23-2009 at 02:22 PM.

Re: does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
I can't answer about tiered skirts either simply because I haven't been looking. but on your other questions:
I wear a dress size 10 - 12 and I have made my sarongs out of sari material or every once in a while other material which catches my eye. They are generally abut 3 yards and wrap around my waist and hips twice. Si excellent coverage, yes, I ca still walk in them
As for tops, depending on how casual or dressy it is, The Gap has a huge variety of Tee's right now which are fitted and have a large choice of colours. If you need to go a little dressier, Anne Taylor Loft has twin sets in a big variety of colours as well. Express has both, although not as much colour selection.
Long dresses have always been popular even if they haven't been "main stream."

Re: does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
The only thing I can speak to is the sarong -- my favorite one has an interfacing that's nicely tapered & fitted at the waist and secures with hidden buttons. There's no knot at all, just a draped section that sort of creates the look of the outer end being tucked into the waist, but without the bulk. Nice!

Re: does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
I always end up sewing ribbon to my sarongs to make tying easier- so if it comes with that, so much the better! I like that better than a longer sarong bc the longer sarongs end up pretty tight when wrapped, for some reason tying it with ribbon leaves it free to shift more so I can take normal steps :)
my sarongs are all batik with a range of tones in whatever the color is, so I can usually find a nice v-neck in a compatible shade. I imagine a sarong with stronger lines or color contrast would be harder to match.
I would wear tiered skirts if I could find one I like- most of the ones available now are not very full & rather cheaply made- seams falling apart, etc. 'course we don't have much selection in Alaska...

Re: does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
the rayon sarongs are really cheap but a lot of them have that knotted fringe ..it always gets tangled then you have a big knot with a clump of tangled fringe. pisses me off. yeah I'm with you BD I just wear a dress..you can get dresses dirt cheap here, perfect coverup. plus sarongs only cover the legs and if I'm out after a big breakfast my stomach roll hangs over the sarong ..l;,..l;,
I think it was two years ago the ombre tiered skirts were really popular here..you could get them as cheap as $20.
was dyeing some of those silk knit tops, they work really nice as a layered sheer coverup and match up with dyed silk skirts but just a bit of sweat and the armpits are wet. gross.

Re: does anyone still wear tiered skirts?
I would wear sarongs more if they were longer both ways. If I wear a skirt like that I like it to be ankle-length and most of them sit at the least flattering point of my calf. Also, they're a touch skimpy.
Cutting a sari short to 3m or so works really well, but I must say there's a dearth of nice suitable saris round here at the moment. My *favourite* one is too pretty to cut! It must be kept as a sari!
