    Lining under the eye

What's your preference: lining directly under the lashline or on the waterline between the lash & eye? I loooove the look of the lined waterline on some eyes...on mine I think it just makes them look smaller. So I tend to use a smoky shadow under the lashes and then do a black line right at the very base of the lower lashes for definition.

Also, I think when I try to line the waterline I am using the wrong product..can't seem to get my liquid liner to stay put in that very wet area.

I use mac liquid last and it doesn't budge - i've even fallen asleep with it on and it's still perfect in the morning.

Dee, you might want to go with a contrasting color - say, a white or a color that picks up an accent in your costume, like turquoise or green on the waterline - it will help to open up smaller eyes. You can still smoke out the lash line with dark liner, but with a bright color on your waterline, you'll get an Arabic look that doesn't make your eyes look like they are two holes burned in your head.

and ps: i have small, deep set eyes and when i smile they get all scrunched up by my big cheeks. to help make them pop and look bigger i'll do a gold on my waterline and then use black or a smokey grey at the lashes. sooo sultry.

If you want your eyes to look bigger, line them on the outside with liquid liner, then extend the line beyond the eyes. Then use a softer pencil to smudge it a little bit.

If you want your eyes to look brighter, line them on the inside.

    Or do both ..g.:

Oooh I would like to see a picture - I've never seen that before! With a color, that is, as opposed to white.

I don't like the feeling of liner in my waterline, so I go with in the lashes. I also usually wear glitter, so that wouldn't work well in the waterline.

I use a regular black or white eyeliner pencil for the waterline and dark eyeshadow for liner with a brush.

Tamra is right the white makes your eyes look bigger. Never tried the color thanks for that tip!

This is exactly what I do. As I get older, my eyes get smaller relative to the size of my face (no, really, this happens to people!) so I'm all about making them look bigger.

I line right along my lower lashes with a dark color (not black). In the waterline I use a bright blue or teal. For stage, distance or drama, I use shadow in a very light color under the lashes (same color as my inner corner, usually mint green because I have green eyes, but could be any light color). I don't extend my dark liner much beyond the corner of my eye, but that light color I'll extend pretty far, so it sort of 'underlines' the dark shadow that extends from my outer lid & crease.

ETA: This isn't exactly how I do my lids, but the lower lid is similar. I think it's pretty, and eyes look huge and bright from a distance:

I can't do that, it makes my eyes look incredibly small. I think it works on that particular eye shape. but mine look best with no lining below.

Have you tried lining only half or so around the bottom? I do that, and I think it looks good. I like the extra definition around my eyes (makes my bottom lashes look fuller, too) but think that the full lining makes my eyes look tiny.

I've been looking for that youtube vid with the contrasting color inside the lower lid, and so far, no luck. It was only about a week ago that I saw it - this is what happens when you watch too many youtube vids.

    Re: Lining under the eye

On many people, I really like the look of lining the water line. On me, it makes me look like I have 2 black eyes. Plus, I have problems with my eyes that makes them water sometimes (believe it or not, I am actually allergic to the protein in my eyes, and I produce 3 times the normal amount of that protein!), so the water line just doesn't seem to work for me. I line just under the lash line with a very thin brush and wet black mineral eye liner (sometimes silver or a different color- Bare Minerals "Sex Kitten" wet makes a great eye liner! But for most performances, I just go with black.

    Re: Lining under the eye

I do it two different ways, depending on my mood (my moods last a few weeks - months at a time).
I always use black / brown and white / beige eyeshadow to play with contrast and highlight. Sometimes I use a little purple on the black, but other than that, no color. The upper lashes are always lined with black, sometimes all the way, from inner to end other times just the outside half. I always use black eyeliner.

    1. line the lower lashline, under the lashes, and only from the middle to outer corner. Nothing on the waterline, maybe white.

    2. line with kohl the waterline and under the lashine, very heavy. Of course in this case the upper lid is lined heavy, and with the eyeshadow I make it smokey.
I found that if I only line the waterline with black, it makes my eyes look extremely small and I also look sleepy. Lining everything heavy, somehow opens up my eyes.

Here's the video: the shocking blue at :48 is really cool, and would look amazing from stage. There are several nice looks utilizing contrasting colors on the waterline in this vid.

Sometimes I do the very outer third, yes. But the bottoms of my eyes are quite round and they close right up if lined along the actual eyeline.

I used to sometimes do hardarse oldschool ballet-type makeup with the line below the eye and the two lines at the corners for big stage, but I don't generally dance on big stages much these days.

I don't like putting anything on my waterline as I'm squeamish about eyes, though I did go through a phase of lining the inner eye about 20 years ago. I find my eyes run a lot when I go out into the cold, which is not good when you've just put your performance face on.
