Milk of Magnesia as a mattifier? Anyone tried this?

I read about this on makeupalley.com and have seen several youtube clips about it but I'm curious if anyone here has tried it!

After trying (and loving!) the Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel as a primer I consider myself pretty open minded!

The Monistat is a great choice! MOM isn't so good though some might like it.

The problem arises from the pH of MOM (or baking soda, which some also tout as a good exfoliant).

Please read the following post on pH and why your skin prefers acidic products. Why pH is important -- skin, products, acids, etc. - Acne.org Message Boards The product you wish to use is alkaline and will damage your acid mantle and increase the risk of irritation.

Also, here's a link to some pH ranges, MOM included:

I and many others find that blotting papers are the most useful tools for reducing that oil-slick look. If all else fails, the tissuey toilet seat covers in public restrooms work admirably as a blotting paper. One could be cut into many and you'd be set for an entire performance.

Not as a mattifier, but I have really oily skin and have used it as a mask to keep the oil at bay. It worked, but only for a couple hours. The best thing yet I've found to keep down oil production is omega (3-6-9) supplements.

None of the mattifiers work very well for me and many tend to make me break out. I'm usually home during the day so I don't wear makeup and give my face a splash of warm water to keep the oil down. When I'm out and about with makeup on, I use blotters and a powder. (Or tissue/toilet paper if it's all that's handy)!

I'm looking for something to help with the oil in general, not just for performing. I love blotting papers as much as the next girl but feeling a steady need to mop up is a pain in the butt.

Milk of Magnesia can work well, if used as a very thin layer. I learned this from Paula Begoun, the Cosmetics Cop - I love her.

I actually use MoM to calm sunburn. It really works.

It works as an antiperspirant, but it does make the skin white and I think it flakes a bit when it dries.

My skin is oily but also tends to get flakey, esp on my nose, and MoM makes any flaking look more obvious. I use the Monistat anti-chafing gel as a base coat and like it a lot; and it does beautifully at concealing any flakiness. I also add a final heavy dusting of mineral veil (even if using a non-mineral foundation). This helps me keep from getting shiny and it works fine to add more later on as well, if I need it.

I think it helps give skin a more matte appearance. I put it on in a thin layer with a very damp sponge. I have sensitive skin, and it hasn't bothered my skin at all.

I use it as a deodorant and love it! It's only gotten on my clothes if I rush it and get dressed before it dries.
