Hello, my hair has not been cut by a professional in lets say 4 years. Yes, I kid you not. Usually I have my James trim about an inch off every three months and I learned to layer on About.com, lmao! But, I haven't done it since probably March and I would like to spend money to get a nice trim and shaping.
Are there any pictures of truly long hair that I could possibly find somewhere, besides the Guinness World of Records hair lady, or someone that doesn't have extensions? I mean I feel like using pics of Ansuya or Sonia for that matter. I have wavy/curly hair.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
I would be curious too...I finally allowed my hairdresser last year to put in some "light" layers on my already straight/slight wave hair. You might be able to go to a couple of hair salons and check out their books. They may have a book for long hair or take a look at the other hair books-there is usually a little section with long hair styles. Everytime I go to my hairdresser, I am always looking through these books to find some inspiration but...

I have the same type of hair. Wavy, lots of body and it hangs to my waist. I recently got layers and long bangs. Changed my life! I still have super long hair but it holds curl and style so well now without being so weighed down. It's worth it to pay to go to someone who really understands long hair.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
but they're not so keen on people getting their long hair cut, I guess because so many people/hairdressers tell them to get it cut.
I'm having 3inches off mine tomorrow. But I've been umming and ah'inng for some time about getting a 'proper' cut but can't make my mind up.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
lol! i'm the contrary. after years of coming out of hairdressers disappointed, after my last visit i decided to 'fix' it myself. and i did. and i was more pleased with my cut and got so many more compliments than i used to, that i decided that's it! I'm doing it myself from now on. it's less of a pain, i get what i want, and i don't have to spend a small fortune just to end up disappointed (and have to come home to wash it again. cos i hate the smell of all those weird products they put in it!). and at least i know what i'll end up with. cos hairdressers, no matter how much you explain it to them, pic in hand and all, they always adapt your wishes to the current fashion. and the current fashion is rarely a wonderful thing, least around here -_-

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
There is a hairdresser on Newbury St. in Boston, her name is Magdalena, she works at Luis' Salon. She understands long hair and will not take off more than you want her to and will work with what you want.
I'm not so sure she understands curly, which is a whole 'nother ball game, since she always straightens mine, but I'm very happy when she does my hair, irrespective of that.- A deeply desired goal gives context to present experience... M. Stanton Jones

A few years back I got long layers and I really liked it. I have curly-wavy hair and can wear it either straight or curly, and it looks good both ways. So except for drying time, it's very little maintenance. The trick is to get a hairdresser that doesn't cut off more than you want him/her to.

I hear ya! I have been doing it ever since I graduated Nursing School. I just didn't have the time and I wanted to spend the money on getting pedicures every two weeks. ..l;, My hair is awesome! Especially, when it is humid. I love my wild hair!
Boston is so far, but that is where everything is. Sometimes I feel like moving, but with the baby, not so sure. It would of been the place to be when I didn't have any children.
I love layers! I haven't found many that don't want to take the straight iron to my hair. I had a really good one, he did everyone's hair all races too. It was nice, but unfortunately where I live people end up closing shop too soon.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
if you do go in to a hairdresser make it explicitly clear that you do not want them to cut more than xxx off. contrary to popular belief, cutting hair does NOT make it grow faster. it only removes dead or broken hair and makes hair look better..hair grows from the follicles not the ends. beauticians always try to sell you on this.
and then sit there with your own pair of scissors in your hand and if she cuts off too much then go after her hair. (it's taken a year for my butchering to grow out..i still want to go back to that place and whack off her ponytail and hand it to her)

They do. I spent years with my hair at shoulder level, with not much happening. Until one day in a magazine they said if you cut your hair twice a year it will grow. When I started doing that, it worked. But, then when I went it was the same length it started. I got sick of spending money on something that wasn't working.
Screw this, I might just stick to what I am doing. ..l;,

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
And then you need to charge her for her butchered hair too! In college I had some crazy hair dresser cut the back of my hair to less than 1/2", while the front was kind of long (and crooked). I had no idea what she was doing in the back, but she kept saying it was "Super cute!" It took me a year to get my hair back to somewhat normal looking because I had to keep getting it cut to even out the original cut. I wore some "super cute" hats that year.
This last year I decided not to cut my hair at all with the intent of cutting it off to donate, and I got a pretty decent haircut when it was time to chop it. The only problem was that the woman said she was going to thicken up my bangs, but she just randomly grabbed hair and the top edge is so uneven. It would probably be fine for most people, but it irritates the heck out of me. I haven't had anyone ever cut my bangs a way I like, so I don't know why I let her try. (I guess she did such a nice job with the rest of my hair, I thought she could cut bangs too.) I don't want to wear my hair pulled back because it's going to show the strange zig-zag line.

I have a horror story. I literally had a mullet for my sophmore year in high school. I had to wear headbands for a whole year, before it grew out. That was when you spent numerous hours curling your bangs into something huge and well, she not only cut my bangs, but the whole top part of my head. It was awful.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
My worst hair cut horror story is when I had an already short pixie haircut, and I asked her to take another 1/4" off and she then left me with a 1/4" or so all over my head.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
I second getting advice at The Long Hair Community. I have had long hair for a long time, and I wanted to go longer, after a Big Stall in the growth department.
It's not like I was even getting it cut or even trimmed, but TLHC helped me gain a foot or more in the past couple+ years, now at mid-thigh.
I did a bit of reading on their message boards, but it's a good thing, like being here at bhuz. Smart understanding people all over the place.
You can always cut it later, so don't rush to cut. There are also self-cutting (of hair) instructions at that website.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
Oooooooh I share the terror feelings of this thread sooo much! my hair are 105 cm long and I went to the hairdresser 2 yrs ago, then no scissors in my life. Do you believe that i use to fall in a 3-day-depression after every annual cut?? And that moment is near...girlz make your hairdresser swear to cut right what you want or you'll go to a lawyer! I could for my hair!
08-30-2009 06:17 PM #22Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
I believe you! As much as I feel like my hair is healthier even after just trimming an inch, I feel sort of a loss. Yes, I'm pretty anal about this but I've had long hair about 95% of my life and it's like having another arm or leg, it has been with me for so long.
The other day I was looking at new hairstyles that are much shorter than I have now because I would like to make a change but I know that I would probably go into a depression too. I see many time where women should cut their hair because the long hair is no longer flattering but they feel the same way - it is hard to let go!

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
^^ I've been thinking about getting a hair cut lately but debating the hair cut/shorter hair thing and being undecided then I had a dream where I got my hair cut....the dream is still real to me. The h'dresser was showing me with the mirror her work and I really, really LOVED it and complimented her on it etc etc but then I turned to her and said, 'but I want my long hair back' it was a sad and funny dream all at once! Needless to say, I'm not getting hair cut after that dream!

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
I'll go there wearing threatening clothes such as black leather, bloody lipstick and masculine walking! kiddiiiiiiing! ...But I will be sharply clear about what I want: a 2 cm cutting.....not 2 cm left on my head!..cr.: I usually give micro cuts every 3 months by myself, or spend a couple of hours..ehm...cutting split end by split end.. ,r:; but you know they don't grow the same way on the whole scalp, it's impossible to be precise along 2 years.

Re: Getting you super long hair trimmed
what worked for a friend: she went in and told the hairdresser she wanted 5cm MAX cut off. then she went on and on, the whole time she was in there, saying how annoying it was most hairdressers couldn't respect that and always cut off more, etc etc etc. the guy was a newbie and didn't give her the best cut ever, but it was decent, and it was 5cm max cut off as she had asked. she made a point of thanking him for respecting her wishes as she left.
maybe we can convert the crazy-cutters one by one this way ..l;,

Wow! That is some long hair!
I do need to have it done before I go to a wedding, but I might opt out. But, I will remember cm instead of inches. If I do decide to get it done.
Otherwise, when I have my wedding which is like over a year away. Azhia will be here, lmao!!! So I definitely try her with it. I say she opens up some salons around the country. No I know that takes time and money.
