Sequin cane woes--can it be fixed?

    Hi--
To make a long story short, for a troupe number, I was forced to buy a sequin cane from a troupemate who bought several online from overseas.
I took it out to practice with it ONCE and it started spraying sequins all over the room, leaving a bald spot where I am not sure the thread was ever knotted. I fear what will happen when I use it again!

Is there any way that sequins on canes can be reinforced? I am going to have to try to sew sequins on the bald spot, but the idea of restitching them all makes me dizzy. Can some kind of glue be used to tack them down or something?

it doesn't work on all types of sequin canes, depending on the base but i've had some luck with fabric glue AND with spray glue. i've never been able to restore the pattern perfectly but it's better than a bald spot.
    good luck!

I would try E6000. I don't have any experience reattaching sequins on a cane, but that stuff has great hold and dries clear.

You might also try Alene's Jewel-It glue.

You know, I have seen the spraying sequin effect in action before in a show, and it actually looked - really cool. When the dancer rapped the cane on the floor, the sequins looked just like sparks flying off!..l;,

Thanks for the suggestions! Ooh boy. Are all of these products available at JoAnn Fabrics or is this something to look up and buy online?

The base of it is fabric covered...muslin? Some kind of white material. I wonder if I could glue everything to reinforce all of the sequins? (I just looked at it--without touching it--and I think a couple of more sequins jumped off!).

It might help if you took the time to use a fabric marker, sharpie or even a bit of dye to color the muslin to match the sequins. Once sequins are applied any imperfections would be less obvious.

    No, it is silver.
Are there such things as silver fabric markers?

i think so, or you could use silver glitter.
i asked because i know bellydancestore has silver sequin canes. they had some the last time i was there. i have one and i've whacked it many a time and so far no loss.
of course because i said that i'm going to lose a ton the next time i use it.

Silver fabric markers are probably more rare than silver paint pens. Sharpie makes metallic permanent markers, too. Or you could just use silver acrylic craft paint on a small brush. The main thing about fabric paints is that they are designed to be washable. Since I assume you're not planning to put your cane in a washing machine, regular craft paints should be adequate. If you are covering a small area, you might also try silver- or silver-holographic-glitter nail polish.

Ah, I think I have silver nail polish if I can't find the markers. I might have glitter, too. I will have to experiment!
This cane isn't from the bellydancestore. I didn't even whack it for it to lose its sequins--just dancing the most basic steps and twirling it once was enough for it to start falling apart.
Thanks so much for all of your suggestions!

I have used a silver sharpie on fabric before and it worked really well

I bought a sequin cane that had some sequin loss (when I got it). I glued down the loose thread with fabric glue, and then covered the section where the sequins where missing with silvery/glittery nail polish from the 99 cents bin. The fix was not perfect upon close-up, but nobody would ever be able to notice when it was used.

honestly, I just used hot glue- it also reinforced the area around the bald patch so I haven't had more loss there. I keep breaking beads when I whack the head on the floor tho...

I'd use hot glue for spot repairs because of the almost instant adhesion and there aren't solvents in the glue to dull the sequins. I used it to make a pair of holographic silver canes with plain bamboo canes from a local costume store and $1 a yard prestrung sequins from JoAnn's. I think it took about six yards per cane. I've also used holographic giftwrap ribbon to wrap canes, though Elmer's glue worked best for those.

You have to be careful with hot glue. It may not have solvents to dull the sequins, but it has heat to warp them. Depending on the temp of your gun and the type of sequins you have, this can be a problem. Cup sequins warp less than flat ones, and smaller ones have less conspicuous warping than something with more surface area like a paillette. Test first!
