September Diet and Fitness Thread
Ok... so summer was not so fabulous for me. I got pneumonia at the end of June into July which made it really hard to work out. Gained 6 pounds.... YIKES! So, since today is the first day of school for my kids I decided it was the perfect time to get back on my Wii Fit and get my butt in gear. I'm setting my goals at reasonable levels and hope to be at my goal weight in 2 months.
Here I go!

I maintained in August, I didn't lose or gain. But I did come up with two short drum solos and am working on a short Greek choreo. The only thing I did wrong is overdo it again - I don't get enough rest and I push myself too hard. So my newest resolution is to cut down on performing, get down more into training and see if my body heals better and gets stronger. Then I can think about losing those seven pounds.

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
Well, June, July and August, I spent a lot of time on the golf course - hmmmm like 4 or 5 times a week most weeks!!! Sometimes I'd walk the eighteen holes, sometimes I'd cart it, sometimes I'd walk nine and cart the last nine. Needless to say, with golfing as much as I do, I haven't been the gym most of the summer. I've started back at it and will be there at least three times this week. Plus, I've gotten back into proper meals and salads and vegetables. I had lost eighteen pounds prior to golf season and have managed to keep that off, but I miss exercising and toning so it's time to get back at it!!!!! I didn't gain any of my weight back and I still want to lose ten to fifteen pounds so it's time to buckle down because I know I can do it!!!!

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
I'm back on the points, myself. Re-joined weight watchers as of Sept 1. Hope it takes this time!! I hated my last leader and now drive an extra 20 minutes to get to my new meeting. At least the leader is cool and fun and all the things I need a leader to be.
Wish me luck! I have about 100 pounds to shed!

Good luck Mihri. You've taken the first step (which can often be the hardest).
August was good for me. I finally had a steady loss each week. It's been slow, but I'm ok with that. This month's goal is to keep doing what I did last month since it worked. I've dropped a pants size and am back in the clothes I want to be in.

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
I just had my physical and doc told me "I want you to weigh less" which translates into lay off the sweets and carbs. I feel like I need to get back on the Live Right thing, where I charted everything that went into my mouth. I lost about 10 lbs when I was doing that- and have about 30 more to go. August was tough because no dance classes, very little biking, too much sitting, too much baking and eating of cookies. I love to bake, but live in a house where everyone else is all "oh I guess I'll have one, and then eat half and leave the rest laying on the plate". I'm more of the "I'll eat 16 and finish your leftovers" school of cookie eating.
I also feel like I need to be a part of a group, so am hoping to join in this discussion more regularly

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
Can total newbies post in this thread? I just joined the board a couple weeks ago and have been lurking for like a month.
BMI totally is wrecking me, confusion-wise. I'm over my BMI (so I'm overweight) but I'm a size 4 in pants with my ribs starting to slightly (SLIGHTLY) show and my guy doesn't want me to get much thinner. How can I be doing this? Am I an alien?
I have switched from regular pasta to whole wheat pasta, which is the same number of calories but I feel a bit better about it, and I eat relatively clean.
This September I mostly want to work on flexibility and tone. And upper-body strength since my legs get a lot more work than the rest of me; though if I dance more that should be my core and arms, right?
I'm an idiot.

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
I don't have a regular doctor (no health coverage) but I have low-normal blood pressure and I walk about four miles a day during the week though I did eight today. I eat pretty clean.
I am 5'0" which I think throws things around somewhat for the charts. I've also got a very solid, muscular, "Russian plowhorse" (thanks dad!) type build. ..cr.: I can't run diddly but I can lift a lot of weight.
I'm 133 lbs. and a size four which my boyfriend says is plenty small enough but I sort of look at the chart and it just says "overweight" and apparently I could go down to 100 even and still be in my healthy range. I don't know what size I'd actually be though. ..c::

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
I am 5'4". When I first started dancing on April 20th, 2007, I weighed 188 lbs and had the crappiest diet you can imagine (think fast-food 24/7). Dance grabbed me by the throat and pulled me in and over the next two years, I increased my classes from one a month to over ten hours a week, encompassing Waltz, Rumba, Samba (my favorite), Swing and Hustle private and group ballroom lessons as well as American Cabaret, ITS, Tribal Fusion, and Goth (oh, do I loves me some Goth!) belly dance classes.
I dropped a full 40 pounds.
More importantly, I slowly but drastically changed my diet. I needed energy to dance and the more I danced, the more important my diet became. I started with small choices (this ONE meal, I'll pick something a little healthier) and graduated to eating a primarily fresh vegetable and fruit-based diet. I was doing AWESOME.
Then there was an electrical fire in my apartment building and I had to spend two weeks in a hotel. I was in a car accident during those two weeks, and my beloved 11 year old Yorkie died shortly thereafter. During that same timeframe, both of my dear bd teachers stopped teaching (one stopped teaching altogether, the other moved away). Then I had to relocate to a new apartment, take my old landlord to court, yada, yada, yada.
For nearly a year, I didn't dance at all. I regained 35 of the 40 pounds I'd lost and completely reverted back to my unhealthy diet.
A couple of months ago, I began picking up classes for first the ballroom and then (finally!) belly dance. I am trying my very best to get my diet right, but I have to say - it seems so much more difficult this time around. ..c:: I've lost only 4 of the 35 pounds so far. *sniff*
Perhaps sharing stories with all my lovely Bhuz friends will help me get back on track faster? ..g.:
*sheez* Just realized how much I wrote - sorry for the book, all!

Most people shouldn't be using the BMI as the only way to judge progress/health and people like you probably shouldn't use it at all.

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
BMI is a pile of crap. It really is please ignore it before it messes with your head.
Body fat monitors are ok but the reading will depend on your hydration level, whether you store more fat in the upper or lower body etc.
If you want to do the whole measurement thing, body fat calipers are cheap and work well - but that depends on how well the person takes the reading.
What happened to looking in the mirror or grabbing a handful of flesh and thinking, 'yep, that's' fat...cr.:
I've just got hold of a PC programme that has lots of fitness programmes to follow, a bit like the Wii fit. So far so good with it. I like that I can track my progress rather than jot it down in notebooks. I'm competitive so I refuse to be outdone by the computer generated chick
It's not healty it really isn't..l;,
Anyhow, target for the month is drop 10lbs.

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
I've always tried to keep a food diary/track my eating in the past and it never worked. I'm awful at sticking with things - consistency is my downfall! I'm going to really, really, REALLY try this month. I have to identify the problem that's causing me to be overweight before I can solve it - and that might sound stupid. How many different reasons are there to be overweight? Just stop stuffing your face and get off the couch, right? But the problem is, I'm moderately active and I eat a reasonably healthy diet - whole grains, no soda, very few dairy products, lots of fruit and homecooked meals, organic and very few processed foods, etc. My mom even took me to the doctor because she was concerned about my weight issues (that my weight doesn't connect with my lifestyle, I shouldn't be this fat, etc) I think my problem is not the quality of food I'm eating but the quantity. We shall see....

Woohoo! Go, Mihri!
I am also doing weightwatchers points system and actually losing a little weight. I've lost about 10 pounds in 7 weeks which is not bad considering I'm ancient and a slow loser.

Re: September Diet and Fitness Thread
hooray Mihri!!
josie, i agree with what everyone else has said, DONT go by the BMI. it's not reliable for a lot of people.
I am going to BRAZIL for 3 weeks in January so I am determined to get into brazilian bikini shape. I am just trying to lose some cellulite and those "last 5 vanity pounds". I have a conditioning class (still in college) twice a week and I plan on lifting weights 3 times a week, plus performing 6 or 7 nights a month, I hope I can do it!
I would say the trickiest part that I'm going to face is craving sweets. I don't overdo it, but after a meal or around the evening, I NEED chocolate. I tend to not keep it in the house because then I will eat it. Its amazing how much willpower I have one day, and how little I have the next!
