Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
Hey everyone, thought I'd ask here instead of trying umpteen brands...
I'm on a goth kick and my Wet n' Wild 'Wicked' eyeshadow (it's a very dark gray with sparkle) just isn't doing it for me...if you've found a nice matte (cheap) velvety black one I'd love to hear where you got it. We have Fred Meyer, Target, WalMart, Walgreens, and Rite Aid here.
I'm also on the hunt for a decent black pencil that is very black, even on the waterline. I did a crazy thing last week and went from platinum blonde to jet black...I love it!!!
:bat: Talk about channelling Lily Munster.....

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
There might be one in the Loreal HIP line since they have such vibrant colors. I did find a black eyeshadow from either Maybelline or CoverGirl late spring/early summer which was a limited edition. Clinique has a black eyeshadow and I did find a couple of black eyeshadows at Kohl's in their make-up line (they actually had some neat colors!). Don't know the prices on some of these (although the Maybelline/CoverGirl are fairly inexpensive).
As far as the black pencil, I did find one that I like from Avon (Jill Dempsey line?). The pencil is not hard and on the other end, there is a spongey smudger. I believe I paid about $5-6 for it.

I totally forgot about that Hip brand. I do like their colors, especially the yellow, weirdly enough. Keep 'em coming, girls!

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
I love the black shadow I got from Alexis Vogle, it has a hint of a shimmer. Her makeup is great for the stage. But a super cheap subsitute that I found, looks the same but doesn't have quite the staying power is by Maybelline.
From platinum blonde to black? Awesome! I'm a total believer in changing hair colors.

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
Yep, platinum to black. I used the ColorSilk cheapo that cost all of $2.97. I was totally crossing my fingers AND toes when I did it because bleached hair will often not take color because the hair shaft is so damaged. All my makeup colors have had to change, even my eyebrow pencil!
How much is that Alexis Vogle shadow?Where do you get it?
How does Eye Kandy look layered over black shadow for performance?

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
i love the mac back matte black shadow. i consider it inexpensive because a large size black shadow has lasted me over 3 years and i use it regularly over eyeliner. it stays the best, even when perspiring. if you get the ppid pro discount card, it costs even less.

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
I second Sabrina's recommendation of MAC. Most black eyeshadows from the drugstore need to be caked on in order to achieve the impact I desire. With MAC, all I need is one swipe and I'm good to go. A little goes a long way (especially if you use a primer!) and one pot will last you forever. So versatile, too!

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
For a real "sparkly" effect, go with Marshmallow Sugar (if you have) on top of the shadow. Since it's clear and iridescent, it would allow the black shadow to show through. Using it as a liner, you may want to mix the Marshmallow with another color(s), so that the Kandy doesn't get "lost" with the black. Another dancer mixed the Marshmallow with another color (don't recall which one) and loved the effect of it.

I love the Mac black eyeshadow but if you want an even "muddier" look, Urban Decay makes a cream eyeliner that can be used as a shadow too. It's a little more, around $16 but it has much better staying power than most drug store brands.
I put Eye Candy over my Mac and I gotta say it's amazing how fantastic it looks, if I do say so myself!

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
HIP does make a creme liner, similar to the gel liners in a pot, but everything I've read says use a different brush - I have yet to find it in my local Target, but you may have better luck!

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
The best drug store or Walmart black pencil liner is by black radiance. It is a true black and a nice consistency. It is not too waxy or too gray. A true black even on the water line. The pencils are short, but there are 2 in the package.

Everyday Minerals has a black that I use as eyeliner, but it is an eye shadow. everydayminerals.com Very inexpensive, and excellent. I use many of their products, and have been very happy.

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
I bought the Maybelline Style Smokes eye shadow a few weeks ago, and it held up pretty well for a cheap-o eye shadow from Target. I wore it for an outdoor show, and my makeup held up for a few hours afterwards too. I didn’t buy the darkest combination, which had black in it.

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
Revlon's colorstay shadows are good, I think they have it in black but in a quartet, I don't think it's available as a single (but in the US the offerings might be different).
Were you in Canada I'd recommend either Annabelle or Quo, their shadows relly rock and they price point is low.

Milani has a single in black:
Milani Cosmetics - POWDER EYE SHADOW
I haven't tried the black specifically, but in general you can't beat this line for heavily pigmented and cheap, cheap, cheap.
I'm also a fan of L'Oreal HIP, which has a very black gel eyeliner in a pot. Their new Kohl loose powder liner comes in black as well -- has anyone tried that one?

What is "Eye Candy"?
I LOVE those L'Oreal HIP eyeliners in the pots. Rich, deep pigment and they don't come off until you make them. There's also a L'Oreal 'Carbon Black' pencil. If you will join (it's free) at Makeupalley - Street Smart Beauty - Homepage you can look up reviews of cosmetics.

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
Eye Kandy ~ Eye and Body Glitter I never perform without it - I'm up to abut 9 colors now.

I usually do Confetti (holographic silver) over black shadow. But I just tried Icing (sky blue irridescent) over black shadow, and it looked amazing. I think I want to try the Marshmallow idea now too - good thing my local Eye Kandy vendor Basia will be at Hiptastic Next week.

I can vouch for the Milani shadow in "Storm". It's my favorite black and its got a nice subtle sparkle to it. And it's cheap! I use it both as a shadow and to set my cream liner. It tends to migrate a lot if you aren't careful, so you'll want to use a light hand and tap your brush well to remove the excess before applying.

[quote=haven;506984] I third the suggestion for Milani shadows. I've heard it referred to as "the poor girl's MAC". They're great if you want to experiment with a color and get decent quality but aren't ready to commit to $15/pot just yet. Layer them over Urban Decay's Primer Potion and you're good to go.

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
I have ELF's dark shadows, and they are OK for $1, but definitely not pigmented enough, I recommend HiP too.
(Though I do like Elf's black eyeliner pencils, nice and smudgy, but they disappear fast on me - but all pencil liners do so can't tell if that's me or not.)
I have HiP's kohl in black and it is nice to smudge or get a smoky eye, but it's not black enough for me and you can't get a clean line with it. Also, no matter what I do, black kohl always seems to fall all over my face when I apply it, so I wind up looking like a chimney sweep!

Eureka!!!!!!!!!
Wet n' Wild has this shadow compact with iridescent dark purple, white opal, and velvety, yummy black for under five bucks. There's also a nice graphite color. Just look for the ones where the shadows inside are flower shaped. Whoo hoo! They wear decently and the pigments are pretty intense.

There's a HiP eyeshadow duo that's black and silver, and the black is really nicely black. The silver's very silvery, too. I like it!

Re: Best inexpensive black eyeshadow?
This is probably the least expensive eyeshadow I own. It comes with many colors, 120 to be exact, and when I use a primer (I like Urban Decay myself) it works even better. You can even use this on your off days, use as eyeliner, etc. My eyelids are probably the greasiest part of my face and I sweat when I dance, so eye shadows tend to disappear. Actually, had the best luck with this, besides Mary Kay, which is on the expensive side in my opinion. It was recommended by someone I know who likes to do eyeshadow tutorials on YouTube.
Look in the eyeshadow section.

Another fan of Milani here!
I prefer MAC shadows when my wallet is fat...but "cheat"on MAC with Milani and NYX .
Here are swatches of the Milani shadow "Storm" for you to see:
