    khaleeji throbes........

So they are pretty sheer (or can be). What are you suppose to wear under them?

    Re: khaleeji throbes........

I have made 8 slip dresses out of lycra fabric, each matching the color of each thobe.

They are sheer indeed, and also when you dance with them, you have to rise them up as high as you knees sometime. So it's more appropriate when the underdress matches.

I have photos somewhere, but I'm leaving for class. So will post tomorow night.

I have worn my cabaret dress under one with a black cotton sheath over it to keep the stones from snagging the silk chiffon of the thobe..

I have a beautiful teal thobe and I wore a long sleeve shirt with a skirt when I danced.

I like the idea of making a slip dress to go under since you don't REALLY see it, just the color and shape.... Now to figure out how to make one.

I have always worn a regular costume under it because I don't have time to change.
I like the matching slip-dress idea.

Ideally, a long-sleeved dress should be worn under a thobe for traditional Khaleegy dance. My favorite one, which finally just fell apart, was a Thai silk caftan.

Oh dear! Believe me you don't have to be Coco Chanel to make one ..l;, It's just a big rectangle with 3 holes at the top for the head and both arms.

I also leave two slits on each side at the bottom b/c it makes it easier to dance and to go down neeling on the floor to do the hair toss, etc.

Going to find the time to take pics tonight!

If you are wearing a thobe for dancing w/ a group then the group should all have the same color shift under the thobe. In Cartouche ours was yellow. Stephib please show us? The shift is a long piece of slippery fabric that did not catch on the thobe. measure your height from shoulder to floor, double that length and you have your fabric measurement to buy, fold the fabric in half length wise and place a pin about 12 inches or less from the top fold, that will be your arm opening. then fold the doubled fabric in half so your outside edges meet and your arm opening pins meet and are even. Cut an oval for a neck line, not too wide then sew some bias tape of the same color to it to form a seam around the neck line. Sew the shift closed from the armhole pin to about 24 inches from the bottom. Hem the bottom and sides of the opening and your done. Nothing fancy. but looks good under the thobe
    Hope that helps

It is worth making one up in the right shape as it makes it easier to swish the thobe and make hoods etc. I have a deconstruction on Making a Khaleegy Thobe

I have a long, one piece slip that is used under wedding dresses and it works great. It took no sewing, was cheap, and has adjustable straps.
