What Are You Working On? October 2009

I didn't want to take away from the Halloween craft thread so I am starting an October one for our regular projects.

Today I made huge progress on my ongoing penny tribaret costume. I finished the chain, I finished beading the upper left cup. I went to Jo Ann's and bought some coppery swarovski cyrstals to bling up the beaded belt trim on the top of the bra. Looks like the center medallion isn't sitting right so I'll re-do that after I reinforce the inside of the bra.

I need to bead the other side of the belt and decide on how I'm going to drape the chain. I'm thinking about adding coins to the chain drape for some noise but thats still up in there. PS..not wearing this set with the red dress. Its debut, when done, is going to be worn with a big, fluffy green skirt with matching vest and I will be dancing to a 9/8.

I finished alterations to my new pharonics. I got to make a necklace for my uncles weddings (which will double for dance costumes) Finishing up stuff to prepare for Raks East.

I have a photoshoot on October 10th, so my early activity will be prep.

I just got a basic dress form, so I'm hemming like crazy. I need a new upper knife on my serger, so a trip to Tokyo is in order.

Later this month I'll be working on some costume magic for Ezma, and a coin costume for local dancer Farasha.

Ever so slowly working on creating coin bra cups to fit over the sugar petals cups. I have one fixed and ready to solder the jump rings, just have to wait till the bruises go away before starting on the other cup. Drilling the holes in the coins (46 coins per cup) and working with the rings was hard on my hands.

LED lights to that costume? Wow, when you get pictures of it lit up will you post them because that's just freaking awesome. What a beautiful costume. I love the whole tribaret look.

I can't wait to see the medusa costume.

I just received a beautyful red and silver costume I bought from Amity (who got it from Shaharazad).

It needs a few aterations to fit me properly: replacing the hooks, adding two pieces of elatics on each sides of the top of the skirts. Fixing a few beads that are loose.

    Here it is:

And of course, I have to keep working on my two "beasts" the leopard and the zebra.

Still working on the "Blue Jewel" costume. I didn't like the way I did some of the beadwork. So, I took a deep breath, and removed what I didn't like and am working on replacing it with something I like better.

Am already scheming my next costume project. I'm thinking it will be a black and silver costume, but I also bought a fabulous piece of hot pink and gold fabric from Surida that I need to do something with.

Also, bought a gorgeous pink Pharonics Mermaid from Aradia that needs some sprucing up and adjustments. I got it washed, that was the first step. Now it needs a little refurbishing and hook adjustments. I took the plunge and washed it in my washing machine (on delicate). I put the skirt and bra/accessories in separate pillow cases, tied knot in each case and tossed it into the machine. It came out beautifully with no more bead loss than it already had. Now it's sparkly clean and ready for a little more sprucing up.

This is nowhere near Sarah's blingy gorgeousness! But I just made this dress... it needs some bling, which I hope to get to soon. I want to finish the beadwork on my blue costume first, but I had to get this dress done up as a model for a troupe I'm making some for.

Sarah never ceases to amaze me!
    Adishakti: love the fabric!!

I'm working on a very "earthy" costume with natural elements for my collection... the colors are kind of "fall inspired" ..

I am altering all of my bra and belt sets; I never knew how until recently. I always used pins and that is a bad way to put on costumes. Not much to compare it to here but it is a huge, big deal for me! Thanks for listening!!

I have some back stage photos of the costume on my Facebook page.

    Sarah Skinner | Facebook

More to come- when I get some back with lights on!!!

That black fabric... It has been sitting in my fabric boxes for forever- It was experimental fabric I was developing when I was a fabric designer- it is black cotton lycra knit with a clear laminate on it. I have the test samples. I dont think it ever went into production due to the cost of producing it.

I've been working on this for a while. It was my first true belly dance costume. It was one of those monster fringe V-belts, that fitted horribly. Not an airport special, it was fairy good quality (from early Turkish Emporium) just not my size. Here's before:
    _MG_5310.JPG.JPG
    This is how far I've gotten so far. I usually don't work with velvet, but I saw this silver colored stuff and I couldn't resist!,r:;

Here's a close up of the fringe I made and sewed on by hand:

    and finally the belt:

That veil fabric looks familiar. I think I had the exact fabric in gold. It's beautiful in black.

Thank you! Working on the back of the belt's fringe, the strap and sewing the lining on and I'll be done... of and sewing on a couple appliques on the sides to give me an extra inch that used to be a gap between the front and back on one side.

Running to JoAnn's today to get some more thread and some fusing stuff, if they have some, to get rid of the stitch marks.

Okay made a matching top and got better pics. Also added an over skirt to the pants. I'm thinking gauntlets. Which color (brown or pink?) Also both tight or a bell and a tight one, or two bells?

Re: What Are You Working On? October 2009

    Everyone's projects look fabulous!

I have pictures (bad ones) to share, but I'm still excited. I made an 8 point skirt using directions from shira's site and some big poufy gauntlets (tried to show them in the photo). The skirt isn't perfect by far (had issues with the waistband), but for a first attempt at working with chiffon, overall I'm happy. Is there a tutorial anywhere on making elastic waistbands on circle skirts?

Anyway, it works well with the Wall o' Fringe troupe bedlah, so I'm thinking it may stick around for a bit. The nice thing is that I can wear the skirt either over another skirt or alone as the chiffon isn't super sheer when doubled as it is on the skirt.

I'd echo the brown strip and pink field look that you have going on with the pants for the gauntlets. That would bring some pink up to the top half of your body to reinforce your color scheme.

As for the shape, I'm partial to bell sleeves myself but I think that outfit would work really well with more form fitting gauntlets as well.

Good job with the chiffon, Maryraks. I always use wide single fold bias tape to make a waistband for a chiffon skirt. Shira describes it on her website. The sturdy material on the bias tape gives a good, firm base to attach the chiffon to. It will make the waistband on the skirt last longer, too.
