    Costume advise needed

So I have been trucking along with my peacock costume and things were going just find til I got to the hip scarf. I plan on using this for a comp in January where I will be doing a cane choreo in case that helps you all. Here are the pics of the dress so far (sorry for the lousy quality, I have yet to understand how you all get such good clear shots at home). The braided thing is part of the head dress that I am wearing in the shot with the BD do rag and wig. My problem, the hip scarf. I got these great black iris paiettes that I wanted to put on a black scarf so that I wouldn't be cut in half with a color as I am already a shortie and don't want to look any shorter. The paiettes just don't want to lay flat. They just keep sticking out at all angles and it ends up looking sloppy. I know that I have to string them with a few beads at the top for movement and what not but why won't they lay flat? Is it because they are too light? How do you make them heavier? Should I scrap the paiettes and just do silver coins to match the do rag? Note that in the pics, the paiettes are not on there, I took them off in a temper tantrum over this sorry. Suggest away my dears.........

I think it the place of the hole in the paillettes. When you string it, then the beads, it causes the paillette to tilt.

I'd try putting the paillettes on 'jump rings', then attach the string/beads to the split ring.

    (This will take time though)

It's going to be a pretty costume!!!

    :-)

Or, maybe add bead tips (not sure what they're called but you fold them over knots, to hide them.
Instead hiding knots, maybe you could put them on the string, just above the top of the edge of the paillette?
    (I hope I made sense!)

I looked it up, they're called 'crimp beads'. Hopefully this link will work. Most craft stores that have beading supplies should carry them.

I do have jump rings, maybe I will try that.

    It's coming along great!

I thread through the pallette, make a knot far enough away from the pallette hole so there is a loop for the pallete to move freely in. Then I put some fray check on the knot and thread through a bead large enough to sort of jam the knot into. Then I thread the remaining thread, pull it through a few smaller beads and the fabric and secure and knot it...if that makes sense. It's just one way to do it.

If you're using beads small enough to pass through the pallette hole:
you can also knot and thread at the back of the fabric thread through ,say, 6 beads, through the hole, and then back into the first three beads and back through the fabric, creating a bead string and a loop where the pallette is in the loop.

    I'd try this way first.

(I forgot this way earlier, I don't get the chance to craft like I used to)

Linnyg, do you mind if I steal a picture of the back of the dress and put it on my private (not costume related) blog. I'm crazy happy with it.

I am using seedbeads so this might just work. Will have to try tonight. I have swine flu so I have been in and out of lucidity the last few days and things are only just starting to make sense!
