Things in your gig bag
Greetings ladies
I was curious what you have in your gig bag that you can never have enough of. Safety pins, hair pins things of that nature. I want to put together some items that are useful to dancers.
Thanks

At Sally's beauty supply - rice paper. This stuff blots oil and sweat while not disturbing your makeup.

I would like to add a little first aid kit, after my duet partner stepped in a piece of glass during our last wedding performance (and they ensured us they sweept (sp?) the stage for us!!)

Hi Sean,
Here's a fairly general list of things that are useful to have in the dance bag:
Baby wipes
Diaper pins/assorted safety pins
Needle and thread (heavy duty, neutral color)
Small scissors (embroidery or cuticle)
Nail file (emery boards)
Glitter body/hair spray (silver/gold from Walgreens)
Travel size hair spray (extra hold)
Eyelash glue
Rice blotting papers
Emergen-C packets
Red lip liner pencil (drug store quality ok - Jane or NYC)
Black eye liner pencil (drug store quality ok - I like NYC)
Clear nail polish
Small towel for sweaty dancer
Hand fan for same
Pen/notepad
Ditto on first aid supplies - band-aids, alcohol wipes
Travel nail polish remover pads
Feminine products (okay I'll be specific - tampons!)Last edited by tamrahennatx; 11-15-2009 at 10:05 PM.

Re: Things in your gig bag
There were past threads on this issue, I drew lots of info from there. I have a tendency to forget basic stuff, so I have a rather long and exhaustive checklist, that fits almost any type of gig I do(from studio hafla where I usually take a video camera to a stage performance). If the stuff is irrelevant to a particular type of gig I just ignore it. And I just keep adding to the list... Feel a bit embarrassed to post it, it's sooo long, but here it is.
Client contact info
Driving directions
Receipts
Pen & small notebook
Sharpie (to mark CDs)
Promotional Material
Business cards
Flyers
Music
CD
Backup CD
Ipod
Ipod cable

Double Veil
Spare veils (for BD parties )
Spare hip scarves (for BD parties )

Small sewing kit
Warm sweatshirt & socks

Re: Things in your gig bag
As permanent roadie for daughter's dance company, I always have medication to control diarrhea, ace bandages and sports-drink powder (for electrolyte replacement) in the medical kit. Essentially, if an athlete might need it I pack it.

Re: Things in your gig bag
Gig-less here, but I pack a PBJ and some cashews or peanuts, as my blood sugar is often on a different schedule than the workshops I attend. ... If I don't eat it there, I have it for work.
And no, the folks at workshops don't *always* have something for you, even though we're all dancers and dancing. (shrug) Bring water, too, just in case. Have some spare in the vehicle for afterward, too.

Re: Things in your gig bag
not everything in here applies, unless you are also the stage manger for your show: Stage Manager's Kit
i have a sewing kit, lit roller (the red fabric kind, not the sticky sheets) mirror-hairbrush combo, my makeup kit (i put it into a travel bag as i finish putting it on) a little towel, saftey pins, bobby pins, contact case, deoderant, listerine strips, tampon (i use a diva cup normally, but i have one in there incase of a sneek attack), my cd case and iPod, cover up, a smooth length of fabric to wrap my bedlah in after i change out of it, change of cloths, (in the winter, i wear my boots in and keep my dance shoes in the bag), benadryl!, and 1/2 a xanax (for emergency use only), cap stick, knee brace, and extra bits of fabric and beads etc that match my costume, practice veil(as a backup) matching veil, business cards
i'm going to take my first aid kit out of my lab backpack and restock it for the dance bag soon. it's got rubber gloves, neosporin, bandaids, more benadryl, and im gonna add a chemical reactant icepack.
oh! why don't i have shout whipes? that will also be fixed ^_^Last edited by raqFariha; 11-16-2009 at 10:13 AM.

Re: Things in your gig bag
Personally, I like to bring a can of that Hump-Off spray that you spray on your furniture to keep your pet from humping your sofa. Comes in handy to spritz myself with when dancing at hookah bars and any other venues where I detect a "boys-club" vibe .w.:..l;,

Re: Things in your gig bag
Yes! I saw it in this really odd pet supply catalog a looooooong time ago. I was laughing my a$$ off for 20 minutes! I don't think it's really called Hump-Off, but that's what it's for. Unfortunately, I just looked it up and can't find it for the life of me....bummer ,f::

Re: Things in your gig bag
Do they make hump on spray? I could use some of that!
tylenol
tampons
toupe tape
hairspray
deodorant - this one super important in case you got the nasty unwashed costume blues. You forget sometimes and you are out dancing and going what is that smell?
On the same note - perfume
flask of booze or airplane sized booze bottle
shoes
flip flops
cover up
bobby pins
safety pins
sewing kit
x2 body stockings of you use them
x2 costumes - you never know!
business cards
zills
cds
ipod and 2 kinds of cords
ipod charger
underwear
veils
makeup
hair brush
tweezers
I think that's it!

Re: Things in your gig bag
Most importantly that is NOT listed is WATER. and a towel.
Some extra scarfs in case I forgot a belt or bra (uh NEVER!) but just in case. Extra veil, zills, backup CD's, personal bar (he he he boda bag). cover up (NOT YOUR VEIL),extra large stick for the idiots in the room (including owner), if you forget your cane look for somebody who uses one from the audience or just use a napkin (done both). Opt for a can of mace or a stun gun rather than having a waiter or customer walk you to your car. extra set of car keys. I could go on. I guess you could call me vintage too but all this is valid in some places and don't EXPECT the wait staff to get you water and stuff unless you tip them REALLY WELLL

I took Sean's OP to be asking what kinds of things might you include in a gig bag care package, so I figured water wasn't necessary.
I mostly don't bring my own water; I tend to get a bottle or a glass at the venue, so I don't usually pack it unless I'm going somewhere new.
