mineral makeup contains asbestos?
Dudes sorry I'm on a roll...
I recently discovered the mica mineral makeup that I adore contains asbestos. Not cool.
Can anyone recommend a good source of natural makeup? That doesn't have any hidden crap in it?
is Aveda any good?

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
I've heard Larenim is some of the cleanest stuff you can get. Haven't tried their foundation yet, but I absolutely love their shimmery eyeshadows. The sparkle is out of this world and they have some killer iridescent tones that can be layered for cool special effects. Here's the link - have fun! Larenim
ETA: I've been advised against Bare Minerals, because evidently it contains some crap that makes your pores look bigger and emphasizes your fine lines. Bismuth sulfate, I think?

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
everydayminerals.com.....their 'matte' foundations don't contain bismuth, which gives it that shiny, almost metallic sheen...which i hate....i found everyday minerals on ebay, but they have their own site and that's all i use for everyday and intimate venues.....their intensive formula has the BEST coverage....

Seconding EverydayMinerals. I have really sensitive skin, and they use minimal ingredients, produce their stuff in small batches with no preservatives, and don't do animal testing. They have good prices, and you can order a free sample kit to try it out (or whenever you order). I have been a satisfied customer for years.

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
A few years back, my dentist (alternative dentist) had a hair analysis done on my hair. When he got the results back, he was asking me how I could be so high in bismuth. I couldn't figure it out at the time, but later I realized it was the Bare Minerals. I don't know if that was the cause of the high readings or not, but I stopped using it right then and there.

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
There was one mineral line in Korea found to have asbestos in the talcum powder that they used in the makeup, but AFAIK, the same is not true for mineral makeups around here.
Asbestos Found in South Korean Makeup by Rachel Adler - News - StyleCaster
As far as the concerns about asbestos being in talc, the American Cancer Society says that the talc in cosmetics is cosmetic grade. Moreover, I don't think any of the big mineral lines here (Bare Escentuals, Everyday Minerals, etc.) have talc in them anyway. I'd have to research it further, but I know that BE doesn't contain talc.
Some statements from the ACS:
"No increased risk of human lung cancer has been reported in association with the use of cosmetic talcum powder. Although some studies of talc miners and millers have suggested an increased risk of lung cancer and other respiratory diseases, others found no increase in lung cancer risk. And the industrial grade talc to which such workers are exposed contains varying amounts of silica and asbestos, unlike the purified talc sold to consumers."

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
It seems rather odd to me that it would be *illegal and actionable* to use asbestos in building and yet *totally cool in the US* to put it in makeup. What's next, Agent Orange hairspray?
You do have that whole FDA thing that bans just about anything and the most litigious culture in the world; I am highly sceptical that there is routinely asbestos being used in makeup. Unless it's on the ingredient list, in which case why are you even buying it?

I like Everyday Minerals and I've just started using the products at The All Natural Face on Etsy which are all vegan. Both of these places have small samples or kits available for a nominal cost to try out their products, which I really appreciate.

I use Alima Pure, which I believe has won awards for natural makeup. There's about 60 shades of foundation to choose from and you can custom blend as well, the coverage is really buildable. And the eye shadows and liners are truly amazing, but my fave product is the lip balm. With every order they throw in freebie samples and you can accrue loyalty points as well. Perfect.

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
because of giant loop holes cosmetic companies can put whatever they want in makeup. most people don't read the labels and if they do, don't know what the chemical names are, or what their affects are. many makeups don't include the ingredient list with them, you have to go elsewhere for it.
fun fact, you can't find most American cosmetic or hygine products in Japan because the cost to get them tested and approved is too high for them to invest when the company doesn't even know if their products will be deemed legal to sell.

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
At least the US makes them put labels with ingredients on. In the UK, I am not sure of the legality of it, but an awful lot of cosmetics here do not show the ingredients at all. I do not know how this happens as European law is pretty strict about a lot of these things, and we are in Europe.

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
Call me crazy, but I'm not fond of the everyday mineral's website or colors. Everything seems so washed out and I find the site difficult to navigate. I haven't ordered anything from them though, so perhaps I'm missing the obvious that in reality EDM is a great find.
I am a fan of Southern Magnolia Minerals (Mineral Makeup Cosmetics All Natural Mineral Makeup!). They are big on sales, samples and eye shadow color kits , so you can try new colors without spending a great deal of money. My experience with their costumer service and products have been great so far and I'm about to place another order with them.
Their website states that they don't use oil, bismuth, talc, dyes or perfume, so the cosmetics are gentle on even sensitive skin, so it may be worth your while to check it out.

Re: mineral makeup contains asbestos?
This is true--the FDA does not regulate cosmetics.
I have only recently started using mineral makeup but am a complete convert now. I use Bare Minerals, even though I know about the Bismuth. I haven't had a problem with it and it doesn't make my pores larger, but eventually I might try switching to a non-bismuth line.
I think I tried Everyday Minerals once (it may have been another brand, not sure); it didn't give me great coverage and made my skin oily so I swore off mineral makeup until reluctantly agreeing to Bare Minerals.

Thanks for the tip because I've been looking for some all natural make-up. Just ordered some sample kits from All Natural Face. There's a Black Friday sale at the website: The All Natural Face Cosmetics until Monday. Woot!
