Tucking skirts for a retro look
Does anyone still tuck? I'd love to see pics and learn how to do it! Can anyone help?

Re: Tucking skirts for a retro look
If you mean pulling the hem up and tucking it in your belt or skirt in different arrangements, yes, we do that. I also have been known to take a veil, drape it behind my skirt, and tuck the part about a quarter of the way from the ends into my skirt tops.
If you've got the DVD of the Bellydance Superstars in Paris, Petite Jamilla does something like that with her skirt in the group drum solo, and then you see the same skirt untucked at the end where they're being walked down the stairs by guys in tuxedos and top hats.

Re: Tucking skirts for a retro look
I don't do it because I'm 4'11" and too much pouff makes me look ridiculously short. But you should dig up some photos of dancers from the 70's for inspiration.
How and where you tuck can change the look completely. Experiment with tucking in front, in the back, or tucking just one side. Tucking just one side looks especially cool if you're wearing a nice underskirt in a contrasting color or texture!

Re: Tucking skirts for a retro look
For an outrageous tuck effect...
No harems or underskirt required or desired. One very full double split circle needed. Take the 2 corners of the front panel (near the floor) one corner in each hand, now tuck the corners under the back skirt panel and into cupped area of belt and pin there. You can reverse this process and do the same with the back panel tucked under the front. The look is a very bare upper thigh, but very modest at the same time. The draping is beautiful if the skirt is full enough and it hides too much leg in a spin. A delicate overskirt with this (Persian lace) is fab!

Volume 2 of the Bellydance Television DVD series has a segment that provides instructions on how to do this. You can find my review of the video at Documentary Video Review: Bellydance Television (BD-TV) Volume 2, by Roxalot and if you scroll to the bottom there's info on where to buy it.

I definitely tuck. And I do the veil tuck too. My hips are smaller than my shoulders, so I like to make up the difference to look more voluptuous....plus I adore the vintagey look! I'm all about it!

I knew there had been a tucking thread before! Here it is, in case anyone is interested. Wow, the dancer in the blue bella has a killer figure!

Re: Tucking skirts for a retro look
I often tucked the left end of the back skirt panel in to the front center of my belt and the right end of the front of the skirt into the center back of my belt creating a pantaloon effect with open thighs. I always had a panel or over skirt to cover the under tucks. very pretty and sexy. Some even snaked these tucks between the legs to offer coverage for certains types of skirts or for floor work.

Re: Tucking skirts for a retro look
Can any of you help me decode this tucked look? It seems like it might be two skirts layered, and then one of them is tucked some kind of way. Am I seeing that right?

Re: Tucking skirts for a retro look
It loks to me as though two things are going on: She has grabbed the back panels of her skirt half way down and tucked it at the hip. It appears that she has also added scarves. They are a slightly different colour than the skirts. Many people who have narrow hips do this.
