But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
Just want to lament a little.
I'm had 5 costumes. Then I started noticing how some didn't fit me properly & didn't look as nice as they could on me. So I sold my gold fringemonster Noussa, the belt didn't fit me right. That left me with 4 bedleh. Tonight while getting ready for a show, I reached for two costumes and (sadly) realized neither fit me as well as they could, and I should probably sell them. A Turkish set & a Hanan set.
A big part of me doesn't want to sell either one, the Turkish set colors are fantastic (bright & gaudy - peacock/Mardi Gras with some crystals), but it's probably better suited for someone whose chest would look better in it than mine. The Hanan I really don't want to sell - I never even got a chance to dance in it & it was my first "name" costume purchase & came with accessories (vs. standard fringe workhorses) - but lately I can't get the top to fit me just right without moving hooks into the design & I don't want to do that.
Consoling myself by thinking if I sold those two then I could get a Great Loops.

Re: But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
I understand how you feel. This fall I discovered that none of my 3 handmade bedlahs fit me. I seriously reworked one to get it to fit (with some advice from fellow bhuzers). I tried to make alterations to one recently, but I think it's a lost cause so I just put new lining in it in case I feel like I can sell it.

Letting go of costumes are hard-I seriously need to clean out my closet too but I cant decide which I would let go. Its the actual letting go thats the hard part after a while you move on after opening up the new sparkly you got in its place :) I have one cossie in my closet that is just a bit too small for me-Im using it as my motivator to get me back into shape :) If you have a special cossie that there is a lot of sentiments around it-theres no reason why you cant keep it if it doesnt fit :)

Oh I feel your pain! I hate to sell costumes. I still mourn for some that I sold because my body outgrew them and I needed to replace them with ones that would fit. But if you're free to put the money you get for them towards more costumes, really that's not so bad. Those times when you have to put money you get for costumes toward paying your bills . . . now THAT's depressing.:Asad:

Re: But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
I'm kinda going through the same thing.
These past few months, I've whittled my collection down to 6 costumes, which is simply unheard of for me. I know that's still a decent rotation, but my closet hasn't been that sparse since I was a student! But I had to start getting rid of stuff that didn't fit, wasn't the right color, or no longer suited my style of dancing.
The ultimate consolation, however, is knowing that you're on your way to a perfect wardrobe of costumes that fit like a dream. So get yourself that Great Loop, girl! And realize that it's OK to pass your old stuff along....isn't it funny how we attach so much emotional baggage to these silly pieces of Lycra? ,r:;

Yes its tragic I've been loosing weight steadily over the last 2 years and I'm down to 3 costumes now. Some costumes I ordered and when they arrived they were too big and went straight to sale.
So I've 3 costumes and i do at least 2 gigs a week that need 2 costumes a night-people are really getting used to my costumes!!! Tonight I discovered there was an awful lot of my Hanan bedlah I wasn't filling so thats going next.

Re: But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
I am not dancing ATS anymore and I have skirts, cholis, bloomers and jewelry that I really need to sell but it is so difficult to let it go. I really don't know why I am hanging on to it. I have someone who is interested but I haven't been able to go through what I have because of sickness and renovations to my home. Really, it is time to part with it - so, this week I will try really hard to get through it. Right after I get my room back in order!

I too feel your pain. This summer I sold almost all my costumes except for 2. I kept them in my closet for years because of separation anxiety. When they were gone, I realized that they had caused alot of anxiety on their own. It was terrible to have a closet full of costumes that were unwearable.

Re: But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
I am a pat rack and hate to part with anything - especially a costume.
I still have the very first costume and skirt I made 30 years ago. The skirt is still wearable but the costume is embarrassingly amateurish :)
I've learned to part with things I don't wear often, don't really like, or don't look good on me. Or, if it's hopelessly worn out or damaged and can not be salvaged.
I still keep items that have strong sentimental value - like the Turkish costume I bought in Turkey.

I know how you feel. I've had to buck up and sell some costumes that I didn't really want to, because they just don't fit right.
I at least know they've gone on to happy homes.

im currently in cleaning mode as well and figure if i really miss costume X, i can always custom order it in the future. costumes come and go. and just think, if u sell those that dont fit as well, you can have a new costume or two that will fit you fabulously :)

Re: But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
It's silly to me how I can ruthlessly go through my closet, house, etc and clean out, give away, sell those things which have out grown their usefulness. But when it comes to my costumes. . .
I have sold 2 recently. I still have one for sale. I have a couple more which I will probably put up for sale some place, I just have to gird my loins to do so.
*Sighs*
Ah, to have been born rich instead of sexy! ;-)
Nah, I'll take sexy any day of the week! I can make money!

Re: But *sniff* I don't want to sell...
I hear you! Several months ago I posted a thread about my anguish over selling costumes. I echo Carrara's sentiment about how funny it is that "we attach so much emotional baggage to these silly pieces of Lycra."
http://www.bhuz.com/forum/belly-danc...-get-over.html
I'm getting ready to sell 3 costumes that I either don't wear or don't fit me. I bought them because I love the designs and appreciate them for the works of art that they are, but I need to remember that they're not good for much if they're not out dancing! It also helps that the money I earn from selling them will hopefully go toward a new Bella or two.
Sending you good juju, so you can find the perfect Great Loop for you! I have a silver one that I might be looking to sell, if you are interested... :)
