    Tikkas and hair

Do any of you guys wear large tikkas? Do you always slick your hair back for them? I'd like to incorporate one (or some other blingy forehead ornament) into a look I'm going for, but want to leave my hair fluffy and flowy.

I know I can look for some on ebay, but are there any other good sources for them?

Naj sells them. bellydanceshoppe.net I think. They're cheap and she has them in silver and gold. They're not the really ornate ones though.

    Re: Tikkas and hair

When I've worn tikkas, I like to have at least half of my hair pulled back so the tikka hooks stay in place. I've layered a headband over the top too, just to keep the thing in place while dancing. Then again, my hair is very straight and nothing likes to stay in place, so I might be using some overkill.

They don't call them Tikkas, but that's essentially what they are (on steroids!):

Zorba, those are great and much more in line with what I'm looking for. Thanks for that! I've got this "glamour goth" thing going for some fusion numbers, and I guess I need to remember to look more at goth sites for ideas. I'm not going as earthy and heavy metal as a lot of tribal fusion stuff is; it's more rhinestones, glitz and glitter over black and indigo.

I know it's been awhile since you posted this, but if you think of exactly that link please let me know. What you posted isn't working.

I need it for the August hafla in Meridian to benefit wildlife affected by the oil spill. Are you participating or is that too far for you? I'm thinking about repeating it in Hattiesburg. ..g.:

Darbla, I've worn tikas but found that they sling around a bit and slap you in the face unless you wear it really short. I don't know if you recall (probably not) the silver headpiece I wore in Atlanta for Black Orchid. Its an ornate metal band with drop down ornaments similar to a tika but the whole thing is anchored to the forehead with a fabric band that goes around the back under the hair. Very secure.

I think I still have this one, never worn. I have to check when I get home later tonight. Would sell for $5 + ship.

Is it what you're looking for?

ahh yes tikkas. i used to love wearing them as a kid! if you can get ur hands on sticky ones, try doing that. it's the modern version if a tikka and you basically wear it by your part in the middle, the thing is though you're usually suppose to part your hair to the side, so you've got a tikka there, but the modern version...with no strings attached...literally :)

see what i mean? it's so much more stable than a regular tikka you have to bobby pin, plus it's a more modern carefree take

    Re: Tikkas and hair

Thanks, Lauren and Zorba! I'll check out that site.

Qamar60, sure, I'll take it. PM me with details how you want the money.

Souzan, if you're talking about that ornate doohickey you bought up there, yes I remember it and almost bought one myself. I ultimately decided against it as not quite what I wanted.

My plan is to use one of the smallest Bumpits to make a largish pompadour right up front of my hair. That would probably be good to hook the tikka to, also. I may pull half of the rest of my hair up in a bun, and make/get a large indigo, black, gold, and silver fall to attach to that bun. The rest of my hair will blend in with the fall. My hair is several inches below bra band but not yet waist length. Then when I change from tribal fusion to oriental toward the end of our performance, I'll just yank out the fall, Bumpit, and tikka and be good to go.

    Re: Tikkas and hair

I have worn Tikkas. One cheat to keep them in place is to us spirit gum on them. While the SG won't keep it on, it will help to keep it from moving around while you dance.

I personally always wear the front of my hair pulled back, but with some lift.

Darbla, that sounds nice. Yes, I was talking about the doohickey thing.

Tahira, good tip on the spirit gum.
