How do you store your costumes?
I'm sure some similar thread appeared in le last years, but I couldn't find those...
So how do you store your costume?
I've heard about:
-NOT HANGING a lycra skirt
-putting in acid free silk paper...
I'm really bad, cuz I hang everything in my closet in a plastic garment bag... but I don't want to fold beaded lycra skirts.
Plastic garment bag is best for keeping my costumes away from my cats hair, because my cats love to open closets and sleep in them, leaving hair (almost a new cat) on bottoms of my skirts hanging.
what are the full instructions for storing bedlah or bra/stretched skirt...
Show me pics how you do...

Re: How do you store your costumes?
Great thread! I hang a couple of things I know won't stretch in a cloth garment bag but most of my costumes I put in pillow cases and store in large plastic boxes. I either put a picture of the costume or a description on the side of the box so I know which costume is in each box. I have one over sized box that I store things like acessories, veils, odds and endsin with a list on the side of everything. This system seems to work for me but I'm interested in hearing how others store their costumes.

Re: How do you store your costumes?
i have a couple of those canvas hanging boxes so the skirts or dresses that hang in my closet can go in there instead of being exposed to something they could snag on or exposed to the insulation from the attic falling on them when someone needs to go up there. the bras/belts are in acid free tissue paper then in plastic bins. i have my veils and matching trunks hanging together on one of those hangers that has multiple tiers. cover ups are just handing outside with the veils

Bedlah go in bags, chiffon goes on hangers, lycra goes in boxes

Skirts & veils go into cedar dressers, bra and belt sets go into individual plastic boxes in closet.

Re: How do you store your costumes?
I don't keep anything in plastic as I like them to "breath".
I have several sets of canvas drawers I bought from Linen's and Things that I keep my costumes in. One costume per drawer. Folklore is mostly hanging.
It's in a room that is only costumes and books, so the door is closed all the time and safe from kitties.

Veils and many skirts/pants hang; other skirts/pants are folded in plastic boxes.
Coverups hang.
Bedlah are in pillowcases, along with the accessories that are specific to that costume.
I'm still getting a handle on "general" jewelry and accessories.

Re: How do you store your costumes?
I use garment bags for the full costume, seperate skirts are hung in closet, and silk veils are folded and put into ziplock bags.. Works pretty well...ubtil the closet is to full!! LOL!

Re: How do you store your costumes?
I'm thinking about getting something like this:
[ame=http://www.amazon.com/Honey-Can-Do-WRD-01271-35-Inch-Storage-Closet/dp/B001F51A4Y/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1261404690&sr=1-18]Amazon.com: Honey-Can-Do WRD-01271 35-Inch Wide Storage Closet with Window, White: Home & Garden[/ame]
Is that a good idea?

omg, i lust for it ^_^
if you have fewer pieces and room in a closet that you already have there are canvas things like that which just hang onto the closet's bar. Canvas Garment Bag - Bed Bath & Beyond
you can fit quite a bit in them

I store mine in round lined "boxes" with lids, they are kind of like old fashioned hat boxes and come in different sizes and you can usually pick them up quite cheeply in supermarkets.

I use cardboard round hatboxes. They are lovely, look pretty stacked on a shelf, and usually come with those moisture absorbing packets inside, which I leave in to further absorb moisture. They fit a bra, belt, necklace, and armbands perfectly. They have handles, so at gig time, just grab & go!

Re: How do you store your costumes?
You know what would be great? There are hanging cloth shoe racks with little compartments for pairs of shoes. If they would make those sections large enough for a costume, you could insert one in each compartment and have them vertically hanging. Utilizing space well, easily viewable, and not air-tight so some air could still circulate.
Do they possibly make those for boots? That might make each section big enough for costumes.
Edit: Wonder if this hanging sweater storage thingie would have large enough sections?

I also use hatboxes... all different sizes and shapes! (I'm a hatbox fanatic, lol). I put a description tab on the sides because I stack them on top of each other.

I use plastic boxes with holes drilled into the top sides for breath ability. I use the for everything that should not be hanged.

Re: How do you store your costumes?
I hang most skirts and pants on multi-tiered hangers. Bedlahs are stored in plastic boxes with holes drilled and silica packs, then kept in those canvas storage shelves that hang. Hip scarves and coin belts are in a hanging shoe storage thingey and veils and such are in dresser drawers. I am lucky enough to have an entire room devoted to costume storage.
