Traveling internationally with costumes-- is it safe?

I'm taking a month long trip to Spain soon, and would like to bring my costumes (the few but beloved ones I have) just in case a dance opportunity arises. Has anyone had any tragedies bringing costumes abroad? Lost, stolen, broken into bits? Am I better off bringing my lower end or replaceable costumes, and leaving the custom/expensive ones at home?

I was wondering the same thing. I would probably take it as a carry-on. I dont trust the baggage handling anywhere.

I have traveled internationally with costumes several times. My biggest suggestion is to put them in your carry on bag. I know that makes the bag heavy, and my coin costume almost always gets hand inspected going through security, but this way you know they will arrive with you.

And if they ask you why you're bringing a professional dance costume, you tell them you've promised to do a dance at your friend's party while you are visiting. Unless of course you have a work permit in the country you're entering...

ime: its best to leave your most treasured costumes at home if you are sentimental about them. you never know... and yes, definitely in your carry on luggage if possible.

if you dont have a work permit i would do exactly the opposite: NO business material on you

anyway, i've traveled with costumes all over the place a lot, never had any problems anywhere. when a costume is particularly dear to me i've put it in carry on, but increasingly (with increasing travel), i just pack everything in the huge suitcase and take the risk of it getting lost, just too tired of lugging heavy stuff around. i'm also starting to travel with ONE proper costume and one Galabeya/lighter weight option...

hehe, my last international trip, I stuffed my costume in my tabla which I took as a carry on. They did make me pull it out and show them and only gave me a couple of looks then joked about my "luggage" in Turkish before sending me on.

When I came back from Egypt, the drum I bought was my carry-on. I stuffed the costume I bought inside of it too!

I didn't have anything formal in mind, so maybe it's better if I keep low key on the costumes and just bring the least conspicuous ones.
