Creative People! Help Needed!
I have an airport special that I got as a gift several years ago. It's a lovely ruby red velvet and the bottom half of the skirt is chiffon. The workmanship and fabric is excellent and it fits me like a glove. However, I can't stand the gold sequin lotus flowers all over it. I started to remove one of the flowers but the sequins have squashed the velvet flat so the outline of the flower is still visible.
Any ideas on how to make my airport special "special"? Thanks so much!

What about replacing them but in a matching colour so they tone in with the velvet more, maybe with a bit of gold to pick up the edging, add some danglies for movement...

Hum? If it was mine, I would turn the top into a dance bra: cutting of the sleeves (make some cool armbands with them
), and use the stretch velvet to cover a good fitting bra, using the sequined details to add on the cups, maybe taking the bottom band with sequins and bead danglies and place it on the upper hem of the cups? I think there will be enough fabric in the back to make side straps ,r:;.
And for the skirt, why not make some vertical "ruchings" at the bottom of the velvet band and of course adding some fringy danglies on the lotus flowers details. Well it a lot of hand sewing works but it could turn out cute.
(Oh, and frankly your very hard on that poor cossie,
I wouldn't call it an airport special at all, it's more of a good starter set that all!
)
Good luck with your project! Hug!

Great suggestions, Aniseteph and Qumar! I had thought about replacing the gold sequins with something but I wasn't sure what. And Qumar, I love your idea of turning the top into a bra and ruching the skirt. I'm just frustrated with this costume because it is really lovely fabric and it fits so well. It even has a zipper! I just think the flowers make it look really cheap. It was danced in once at a student show waayy back when.
Thank you both for taking the time to offer ideas! I'll be sure to post pictures of the "new" costume or the ruined heap of red velvet .w.: My sewing skills aren't great

If the flowers are your issue...reworking the the cut wont make you happy in the end. The problem with the flowers is that are a bit crudely rendered...yank off the sequins and redo the design with small flat back glue on swarovski crystals in several colors - or all clear, with some vines connecting the flowers for more depth.

Or buy a pin board and steam press the fabric so that the nap is standing again.
