What Are You Working On? January 2010!
There's nothing I love more than seeing everyone's handmade designs here on Bhuz. Who's ringing in the new year with their costume projects?
I'm working on two projects. A black velvet cabaret set which I have only just begun - I'm still outlining the belt with sequins and bead trim so I have no picture of it. I'm doing a performance at our Tribal fusion event at the end of the month so I am making a tribaret set with stuff I have laying around.
Here's the back of the belt that I am working on. I'm kind of not happy with it at the very moment but I think once I really start with the beading, the chain, and the kuchi pieces/coins I will feel better about it. The picture doesn't really show what it really looks like. My fabric is not that shiny and the black sequins and silver beads throw off a lot of sparkle.

Monika - How long did it take to make this costume? I also wanted to say that your bras always look so amazing and well shaped. Do you use the cups from a regular bra or do you make your bra cups?

Hi, thanks so much. I use very firm cups from a regular bra. It takes from 2 to 3 months to make such a costume, as I am a full time worker and have a free time for making costumes on weekends only. That leopard one took only about 6 weeks because of the holidays. :-)

A while back a bhuzzer posted that she had lost her venus bra! What a bummer!
So I got together with her and made a venus bra to match the original pahronics costume but with a few unique twists. Now it's finished!

Beautiful work ladies!
I'm working on a minimalist costume. It has a trumpet skirt and I'm going to follow the design on the skirt with rhinestone chain.
Should I continue the rushing on the other cup on the bottom, or switch it up and run it along the top?

Re: What Are You Working On? January 2010!
If you have it on the top of one cup and the bottom of the other, will that S-shape somehow be mimicked in the skirt? Such as a chiffon insert or drape from the same hip as the cup that has it on the bottom? If not, then I would go with the bottom of both cups. (I *think* I accomplished what I mean with my Candy costume, shown here on the right - Kiyaana Bellydance - Belly Dance Performer and Teacher in Fredericksburg, Virginia (VA) 22401 and Stafford).

Oh I love that candy cossie! I drooled over it when you first posted it! I think although similar design, my rushing is much larger (to help camoflauge from the side my humungo girls). I've though about adding a slit to the skirt and a little bit of the blue chiffon to the skirt or make a matching belly net...

The leopard costume is to die for!
January will be the month of chiffon skirts for me. I have fabric for 3 double layer skirts for myself (will likely make the layers separate though, so that i can interchange them), and 2 circle skirts for my best friend who got a coin set for Christmas.
Already have one cut out and am letting the bias stretch, the others should be cut out next weekend.

Re: What Are You Working On? January 2010!
Here's a couple shots of the one I'm working on. I took shots of the belt as well, but my camera died before I could get all the photos to upload.

I've been calling it "That D***ed Costume" because I didn't really have a clear image of what it would look like when I started the project, so I've really struggled with pulling everything together. Now it has become the Gothic Snowflake costume.
I started with a purchased bra, replaced the straps and band with sturdier fabric and ribbon, covered it in red stretch velvet and added strategically placed pieces of an old sheer mesh and lace shirt that I've had in my craft stash for years. Then I got all bead-tastic on it.
I'm currently waiting for a mail order of more gems since I completely wiped out the local Michael's stock and they aren't planning on restocking them.

Re: What Are You Working On? January 2010!
I have never, ever attempted to make my own fringe and/or danglies until today. I can not freaking believe how long it freaking took me. I don't suppose there is some sort methodology to making fringe a little easier than hand stringing beads all darn day?
I have started the fringe on the back of my belt. This belt back will be completely finished before making the front because I am winging this design. By the way, the fringe is black with peacock accents. This color scheme is peacock and green, green being obvious.

Luna, you're speaking my language with that red and black design. That is what I called "Gotheret".
Eshta, I don't need to tell you how awesomely gorgeous that is.

Do the ruching along the bottom of the cups, Amity. It will flatter your bust line better.

Re: What Are You Working On? January 2010!
I started another thread about my "airport special" costume but this seems to be a more logical thread for it to be. This was a cheapy bought in Cairo and given to me as a gift. It's well made, good quality fabric, and fits like a glove. However, the sequined lotus flowers were yucky. I removed all of them and discovered that the outline of each one is drawn with dressmaker's chalk or marker. Instead of flowers they now look like little ears of corn. I do live in the midwest so I guess this could be my county fair costume!..g.:

Re: What Are You Working On? January 2010!
Thanks!
That's a good way to put it.
Since this will have a belt and not an embellished skirt, I'll be able to pair it with traditional circle skirts, more modern stretch skirts, and even a pair of velvet melodia style pants, so this can be used for cabaret performances AND Raqs Gothique.

I am really impressed by that leopard!
This one I will finish in a week or so. The bra is done. Kinda inspired by eman's hollywood but with some changes.
