Thread: tip for sewing on glitter dot type fabrics

I know there are those who don't like glitter dot but I do use it from time to time. I ran along this tip for preventing needle gunk up.

I first learned this tip from Linda Stewart of PACC, but it is so helpful I wanted to pass it on.

When sewing the sequined knit fabric - you know the stuff, the knit fabric that has the mylar dots glued on it - take some waxed paper, cut it into strips, lay it over the fabric and sew. Without the waxed paper you end up with glue all over the needle. When I was altering a skating costume for my friend's daughter, I had to clean the needle about every 5 minutes - and that was using a titanium needle, which is supposed to prevent gunking up. But with the waxed paper, it "wipes the needle off" as you sew. When you are finished, just tear away the paper. It works like a dream!"

The other thing that works well with this fabric is "Sewer's Aid". It's a clear liquid that comes in an eye dropper looking bottle. Joann's carries it. It's a lubricant for your needle. Apply a drop every so often to your sewing needle and it helps prevent the gunk.

I'm making a skirt out of glitter dot this week, and I think I have wax paper in the pantry. I'm going to give this a shot!

Sew slow; it will help keep the friction from heating the glue up.

Definately what Shahla said. Sewers Aid works a miracle!

Update on sewing glitter dot - I've found another use for that monistat anti-chafing gel - it works wonders on your needle and thread! I sewed a five-panel glitter dot skirt last night, with four seams and hems, and had no problems at all. I slathered the needle and thread with it and sewed as if there was no adhesive in the fabric at all. :)

ahh! I wish I had seen this thread last week! I usually make matching boy shorts for my costumes. This latest one, the closest fabric I could find was glitter dot.

I always use Sewer's Aid. It works also on that pesky liquid lame as well!
