Swords
Where'd you get yours and how do you like it? I'm packing Wings away (selling or trading my gold ones in Swap Meet if interested), they've got 'wow' factor for GP, but just aren't "me".
I'm starting to feel the drama of a sword though. I've been warned against the one piece cast swords & told to go for one with a distinct separate handle and blade. And to expect to pay in the neighborhood of $70-$100. Is this somewhat accurate?
I see two different ones on Dahlal, the more expensive one says it's heavy - how heavy should a sword be? I know it needs weight to stay in place, but I don't want one so heavy it digs a crater in my head if I don't wear a headband.

Re: Swords
if you can get a saroyan, i highly recommend it. it will be a lifelong dance partner if you take good care of it. i've had mine over 10 years. tried many other styles, but the saroyan is my fav by far.

Re: Swords
I second that also you can go for the cheap twin in Knights Edge .com.
They are both heavy and will leave a dent in your head. I dont use anything like headbands because if you do someone will almost always say "thats how she gets that to stay"

Hi, Purchased my sword from www.cultofathena.com baladi sword. I like it. Used it for several years. I wear a headband because of weight of sword and how it indents. NEVER had anyone say, "Oh, that's how sword stays".

Re: Swords
You can get a light sword (but expensive - 300 USD) from Zen Ptah (Austraila) or Little John from the East coast Dance Sword Gallery

Re: Swords
It's Kult Of Athena - swords, axes, maces, flails, and other medieval weapons ... I'm actually waiting on their "baladay scimitar" to arrive, which from what I've heard is a popular choice. Both myself and my friends have ordered from them before (former stage combat fighter & swordseller here!) and I've been happy with everything I've seen from them.

Re: Swords
Think about ordering a sword from Gitane's Treasures in Arlington, TX. Pricier and very heavy (which I like), but they are fabulous.
She also made Bahaia's skull costume.
I assume she is still in business. I did a quick google and couldn't find her site, but that is probably just me.

Re: Swords
Funny you mentioned this - I saw her today/tonight (she was vending & Amethyst did a workshop earlier today for us & danced tonight at the show). Amethyst was telling me about Gitane's swords & told me how she balances them, etc. I'm considering one of Gitane's, I'll have to look into pricing but it'd be custom & I do like her work.

Re: Swords
I have been very happy with my Gitane sword. It is extremely heavy and that makes it a lot easier for me to balance. It isn't glitzy and definitely more tribal looking than I am, but that isn't a big deal.
It will be expensive, but you will have a one of a kind, personally made sword.
Do it! Tell her I said hi!

Re: Swords
Amethyst was telling me they weigh about a kilo & it'd be custom, so if I wanted designs down the blade and/or my name, she could do that. I'm in no rush, like everyone else in the world I'm on a budget, so I'll be penny saving for a while before I can actually buy one from anywhere.

Re: Swords
Saroyan is also daughter's favorite by far. She had two stolen at gigs so they must be other people;s favorite too. (Don't even ASK me how folks justify walking off with a dancer's sword as though it were a party favor!) The most recent one is a slightly different shape than the ones we 'lost' but they are still great.
