    Wigging Out!

I'm growing tired of my boring stick straight inverted bob...at least when it comes to performing. My hair is too thin and fine, won't hold curl, and looks greasy if I use even the slightest bit of product. And when it comes to styling skills, I might as well be a lumberjack...

Blingy costume + boring hair = Bleh...

So I'm thinking about adding a wig or two to my costume closet...

But I'm just not sure what I like or what would look good on me.

Are any of you willing to post photos of yourselves wearing a wig while dancing so I can have some inspiration?

Or would that be ruining the illusion?

If anyone would like to make suggestions for wig styles, here is a shot of me (with my hair all flipped out by a troupe mate with more hair skills than me)

    Halp!

[EDIT FOR ADDITIONAL INFO] I have tried a pony tail but don't like the way it looks because the hair at the back of my head is "stacked" and too short to pull up. The pony tail looks odd sitting on top with loose hair underneath of it. Not sure how to describe it better than that. I'm thinking that a 3/4 or full wig will look best because it will cover everything up.

I highly recommend getting some clip-in human hair extensions. I got mine at Sally -- 14" for around $65.

Clip on ponytails and 3/4 falls just never felt comfortable to me, and never looked natural, IMO.

Here is a photo of me with my extensions. At that time, my real hear was around shoulder length.

    The hair I grew myself:

Blast from the past -- an old shot in a fun synthetic clip-on ponytail:

My current favorite, a synthetic 3/4 headband wig:

In my experience, the "gateway wig" is the ponytail: inexpensive, readily available, quick to attach, and fun to play with. For me the the headband wigs and clip-on ponytails are easiest to wear. I also have a couple of full wigs I hope to wear at some point. They're really pretty, but I'm not used to having a lot of fullness around my face so expect they will take some getting used to. (Has anyone else had that experience, or is is just because my natural hair is so lacking in volume?)

As an aside, my favorite wig source at the moment is ASAP Hair Makeover (aka "thebeautystop") on eBay -- good value, responsive service, lots of variety, and a smart store design that makes it easy to see what they have and find what you're looking for. Hope this helps!

I've got a full wig that I wear for the times when my haircolor is going to clash with the style/costume color. It was less than $40 and I like the way it looks. I use toupee clips and add in a blingy clip or headband to give it some extra hold.

Here you can see the wig and what my "normal" hair looks like.

Oh! That looks great and I'd never have known it was a wig.

    Re: Wigging Out!

Here's another question... How exactly do the 3/4 wigs work if you don't have bangs/fringe? I'm afraid I'm going to look odd with the front pulled back as I have a sort of baldish-looking patch on either side of my forehead :(

Any tips for dealing with this?

    Re: Wigging Out!

I always wear hair when I dance. So every photo of me in costume is a photo of me in fake hair! My hair is thin, fine, brittle, soft, greasy and gray. Ugh!

My favorite are claw clip on ponytails. They come in dozens of different lengths and styles. One of my favorites is a whole bunch of bitty braids. I'm wearing the pink and black skirt on the left side, you can kind of see the braids
Art on the Bridge Day 4 - tribe.net

When hair color matches the hair piece it's hard to spot a fake. If your hair color is slightly off, wrapping the ponytail clip with a fat scarf in a vibrant color will distract the eye. But if the difference is too great it won't help.

If you have superfine thin hair like mine it's hard to hide the claws under natural hair, so I put a scrunchie or two around the claw to hide it.

I have a couple of whole head wigs that I've worn for specific costumes, like a long, curly red one for an Orion Slave Girl costume, and a 20s bob for Theda Bara. I also have a couple of 3/4 wigs. But the clip on ponys are the least expensive, most comfortable and most fun to wear.

You could probably wear a wide headband to hide the transition or the combs.

That is exactly what I do, and in this pic, no headband, but Azhia brought my own hair over the band of the 3/4 wig, set them with a few bobypins and hairspray.

    Re: Wigging Out!

with your stacked cut, i suggest a 3/4 or full wig that matches your own hair. color.

if you opt for the full wig, make sure it is high quality, preferably human hair. otherwise the hairline will be very noticeably faux. have the wig, especially at the hair line, custom cut to flatter your face. most full wigs come with too much hair at the hairline and need to be thinned or shaped a bit to look natural. keep a few strands peeking out of the wig hair line to blend with the wig hair for a most natural look.

if you opt for the 3/4 wig you can either cover the seam with a headband or pull some of the hair from the hairline of the wig across and hide the seam that way.

what ever solution you chose, i suggest using the "x" method with large roller pins to secure your "new" hair to your "old" hair. with your cut, you will probably do well with pulling the front of your hair into small, very secure ponytails, then attaching the wig over & to those ponytail anchors.

also, add toupee clips at the top & temples for added security, and proper placement during the pinning process.

    re: texture
if you find your natural texture boring, try human hair with a wave. indian or malaysian hair is very nice in this texture, and your color should be easy to find. on my monitor, you look like either a 4 or 6.

Okay all the faux hair fiends may think this is a horrifying suggestion, but you could ALSO, perhaps SOMETIMES wear one of those crochet beaded headpieces that look like a "wig" of long beaded fringe. I've always wished I could wear those but I have, sadly, much . . . too . . . much . . . hair.

Sabrina, the pony-tail method sounds great. I always wondered how I would get fake hair to cling to my slippery straight hair, and that seems to be the solution.

Thank you everyone! These are some fabulous suggestions.
