Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Near-Vampires, unite! ..g.:
My name is Lisa and I used to be a tan-o-holic. I kicked my tanning booth addiction when I had an ugly (but thankfully benign) mole biopsied this past summer. Been using my SPF religiously and dabbling in sunless tanners and Mystic Tan.
But to heck with it. I kinda like that Dita Von Teese look! I want to look like a Twilight character or a Loreena McKennitt album cover babe! I'm sick of slathering on the sunless tanner, faking a "glow" with bronzer and referring to my alabaster beautyness as "fish-belly white." I am luminous, damn it.
Besides, all of the fashion mags are pointing toward a backlash against tanning and a trend toward natural skin. Hooray!
Who's with me? What are your favorite ways to play up your coloring and keep your milky complexion smooth, lustrous and beautiful? Talk to me!

Welcome to the pale side!
(I rarely go out in the sun, I'm still a little dark, because of my Greek, & Cherokee ancestry)

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Yeah, see, I tend to look a little bit sallow when I cross over to the pale side. Wondering if I should try an alpha hydroxy body lotion to brighten up my complexion.
It's just been really nice to see all these naturally fair celebrities like Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansen showing off their healthy natural skin tones on the red carpet lately. I think the public is becoming more aware of the dangers of tanning (and the aesthetic caveats of spray tans!) and, for once, we're seeing a healthy mainstream beauty trend. Maybe there's hope...

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Oh, that's awesome! I can always appreciate any excuse to go buy new makeup, especially at MAC ,r:;
I'm giving extra special consideration to my costume colors as I embrace my fairness. I'm gradually selling off all my earth tones to make way for striking jewel tones. Should probably get rid of my white one, too.
Maybe I need a teal or a cobalt blue next ,r:;
What are your favorite costume colors?

I'm not a member of the pearly-skinned club, but I had to pipe up and say have you seen Razia? She's one of the fairest dancers I have ever seen, absolutely luminous, and she rocks the jeweled toned costumes!

I've only seen your photos, but your complexion is gorgeous! And I wouldn't mind the names of colors you use. I tend to be quite pale despite my dark hair.
Satin - for dull skin try vigorously rubbing tomato all over your face, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse off.

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
I'm so glad you posted this! I have always been super pale (I glow in the dark
).
One of the biggest challenges of having really pale skin is figuring out a way to at least minimize some of the small imperfections (stretch marks, blemishes, etc.) that seem to be less noticeable on tan skin. I swear by pure aloe vera gel (not the clear stuff you find in the first aid section but the 98% pure aloe- I use the one made by JASON). It can feel a little sticky at first but it dries quickly and it seems to temporarily make my skin look and feel firmer and even toned.
I'm really looking forward to hearing everyone else’s suggestions!

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
pure aloe! I totally agree. I also do the i egg white face treatment. Slather on for 5 minutes and then wash off. But heck, that is probably wonderful for all skin types.
So how about those mac colors?!?! Do tell!

Mmmmmmm, tomatoes on my face! This sounds like something my dog would lick right off my face .w.:
I was wondering the same thing about evening out the minor imperfections. I wonder if some type of transfer-resistant, waterproof body makeup would be the way to go...

I am snow white, hear me roar =)
Still needs to get me to the MAC for better eyeshadow colors, but i often stick with black and shades of gray...for costuming too. Even for non-goth events ..g.:

I'm a total diehard goth when it comes to eyeshadow, too. It's almost always something dark and smoky, though I did try violet with huge success recently!

Yes JoLynn, Razia is a FANTASTIC example! I just saw her perform last Friday and she wore a lovely teal and eggplant costume.

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Satin, I'm not sure you'll make the cut into the special truly alabaster belly dancer club. The truly alabaster do not even have the ability or potential to tan. We don't choose to be vampires, we just are. That you used to be a tanaholoc suggests that even at your palest, you probably have more melanin in your pinkie finger than I have in my whole arm...l;,..l;,

I have skin whiter than your average redhead with dark hair. I am quite freckly as well.
I have a difficult time finding foundation and concealer colors that work well with my skin. I do have a nice MAC burgundy eyeshadow that I love.

Enhancing your natural assets and embracing your uniqueness is always going to trump trying to look like something you're not.
Salome from Corvallis, Oregon is another alabaster beauty who rocks it!

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
I'd love to hear if any of you know a good line for a slightly yellow-based pale skin tone. Everything that I try that's pale enough is too pink. Don't mean to hijack - just couldn't resist since makeup entered the conversation!

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Bare Minerals has some really nice warm shades for fair skin. So does MAC and Make Up For Ever. I like to use a warmer shade of foundation to counteract any ruddiness.

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Pale girl, here! I can tan pretty dark if I'm out in the sun a lot, but I pretty much avoid it year round. Don't want tan lines, lol! And I gave up on sunless tan products ages ago; I'm not that high maintenance. Better to embrace your color, imho. Bright jewel tones look best on me. As for eye shadows, I've found that stunning Arab black smoky eye just doesn't look right on me. I like to do a smoky eye with plum, green or deep blue shades. I also like the classic retro look with a great liquid liner and red lips :D

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Another translucent fair chick here - I'm practically blue in winter!
As others have said, jewel toned costumes like plum and burgundy, hunter green, royal blue, teal, etc. really work with my pale skin.
I like Neutrogena's Pore Refining cleanser for an alpha and beta hydroxy product. It really brightens up my skin. I also do a scrubbing clay mask once a month or so that really makes my skin glow.
I have a hard time finding eye shadow colors that work for me and I'm dying to hear Sabrina's color list!

Re: Rockin' the Alabaster Look
Carpediem, I second Bare Minerals and I have also ordered some fantastic stuff from Just For Readheads and Redhead's Fancy. I'm not a real redhead (I'm a henna head
) but I have found that most of their colors suit paler complexions regardless of hair color and, last time I checked, the woman who owns Redhead's Fancy will compile a custom kit of colors that complement your skin tone if you send her a picture of yourself. I am pretty sure that both websites offer a yellow based foundation.
As for body makeup...I have experimented with Kryolan's Derma Color (just on small scars and a few old stretch marks) but I don't really use it that often. They do offer a nifty sample palate with 16 different colors so that you can figure out which colors match your skin tone before you invest in a larger container.
