Creating a "Civilized" Version of Big Hair?
I love big hair, but can never seem to pull it off without looking like I should be gyrating on the hood of Whitesnake's car

My hair is pretty dry and damaged, but I love big, smooth curls. Any tips for achieving volume and wave without frizz, pouff and other undesirables?
Talk to me like I'm a third grader!

He he, could this be un-civilized:

Sorry but I couldn't resist ..l;,..l;,..l;, But seriously would the "Bump It" gizmo gadget be an alternative??

Whoa, mama! How does she balance her sword with that beehive?????

In all seriousness, I'm looking for something like Shakira does in a lot of her videos: wavy, but controlled. Bump-It's scare me! But I kinda like this look, whether or not you'd call it big hair:

The only way I know of achieving that look is to roll it on beer cans while it's wet and let it dry! I sure hope there is an updated version because so far I haven't attempted that yet!

Re: Creating a "Civilized" Version of Big Hair?
If you have naturally wavy hair I 100% recommend using Aveda's "Be Curly" Wheat Protein. I've been using it for years and love the way it enhances my curl and volume - it looks and feels completely natural. I've recently started combining with their Be Curly shampoo and conditioner and it works even better! My hair is really long and Im amazed at how great the product works on it. I can only imagine how much curl and volume one would get with shorter hair!! I would also look into the product "Magic Potion" by Aveda as well. I haven't used it myself but I hear its great with volume. Aparently it gives you that beach hair look without the sand and dryness

When I think of uncivilized...this is what comes to mind.

I figure I'll never have enough hair to make it bigger so love using wigs and hairpieces.

..l;,..l;,..l;, But no kiding, I've just found this on a French forum. Beer on hair will make them soft an light and guess what... gives volume!
After shampooing and rising, empty a full bottle (or can) on your hair and dry them with your head down. The lady who posted this said she used pale ale and after drying her hair just smell like fresh cook bread.
But if you use a strong and dark kind of beer, the smell will sits in and you might attrack the wrong kind of crowd afterward..w.:

For smoothness and curls that will last + volume = I 2nd the wet set (works on my horse tail hair).
Be Curly and curl enhancing products work best on hair that is already naturally curly/wavy (does not work on my horse tail hair).

Oh, and brushing out with a BIG paddle brush is preferred. Not that I've done any of these things for years. Brush upside down also.

Re: Creating a "Civilized" Version of Big Hair?
Horse tail definitely describes the texture of my hair. Straight, thick and super coarse.
I went out and bought some super jumbo rollers (even bigger than the large ones I already have) and will try them out on wet hair.
Any special products I might want to use to help keep the frizz away?

Re: Creating a "Civilized" Version of Big Hair?
Nevermind the Be Curly then. Like Azhia said, it only works well on hair types that are naturally wavy or curly.
For frizz I have tried "light elements" by Aveda and it works really well.
I feel like an Aveda marketer or something, lol... a good friend of mine used to work there and I got crazy discounts for a while so I really got to experiment with their stuff and fell in love

Wouldn't blow drying upside-down in general give you volume without the beer?
Anyway, haven't tried it yet but a newly minted cosmetologist once told me oatmeal and beer would add volume. But bleh.

Re: Creating a "Civilized" Version of Big Hair?
not me, it's generally flat after 5min. meh
me, i'd try a lot of things. i stay away from anything that'll damage my hear (chemicals like hair sprays, heat curlers, brushing it violently, even blowdrying i only do when i'm in a total hurry) but anything 'natural' i'm willing to give a shot at. i'm gonna look up beer see if it's acid or anything, but otherwise, well why not, at worst i'll smell weird for a day or so, won't be the first time LOL
