Talk to me like a third grader!
Where are your favorite places to buy fake ponytails and other fun hairpieces?
I don't know the difference between a fall, extensions, or any of that stuff. I also don't know how to attach any of the above without re-enacting the Flying Muskrat Incident I read about on Bhuz ..l;,
Basic tutorials would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
i bought my ponytail here on bhuz actually. my hair color is nearly impossible to match and i lucked out. forever young sells them. it's just a clip on piece. but because my hair is so thick i put half my hair up in a ponytail and then clip on the ponytail catching part of my regular hair along with it (does that make sense?). i wear them high usually because it stays on that way
and for my extensions i have my mom help me put them in cuz they're a pain the a$$. she just places them at the top but underneath my real hair of course and it gives me amazing volume but flipping takes forever. and last show i used them for we went heavy on the hairspray and i spent like an hour combing out the knots in the back :(
but neither have flown away (yet! lol)

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
This will sound funny, but I go to the beauty shops in the ghetto. Have one of the attendants there help you match your hair color. They have all sorts of styles, lengths, and colors. You can buy wefts (basically a long string with hair hanging from it kinda like fringe). Then you cut them into pieces and sew on toupe clips (they also will sell those at the shop).
There are plenty of tutorials on YouTube. This is just one.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IghgeQDG4Qs]YouTube - Make clip in extensions for under $20[/ame]
It takes a little practice putting them in, but after that it's pretty easy.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
I've done similar--worn a pony tail or a 3/4 the same length, color, etc. as my own hair at times. Synthetic spare-hair can be GREAT for outdoor gigs where there may be a lot of moisture or where you'll be doing multiple shows on a very hot day. Unlike my own hair (or even, apparently, some human hair pieces) which can be a little, er, unpredictable in humidity or mist, the synthetic will always stay in smooth, soft curls--no friz, no kinks, no waistlength "Cathy" cartoon flat-on-top-boufy-on-the-ends. Also, because it holds the style better, I'm not restyling my own (sweaty salty) hair between shows, which can be hard on the hair. At times I've used pieces indoor, too, when I was trying to protect my hair or just wanted a certain look.
Also...especially if you're looking for just an occasional wearing, synthetic hair is a LOT cheaper than human. A new human hair 3/4 piece that comes down below bra strap will cost you at least as much as a new Bella, possibly more. A very similar piece in synthetic you can find between $30 and $120 depending on style, manufacturer, and where you go to get it.
With synthetics you *do* have to be a little careful, though, because they take a little while/combing etc. to get them looking natural, and then they can get ratty much faster than real/human hair. Be sure to get a good synthetic wig spray, and after each wearing spray the piece and carefully comb it with a VERY wide toothed comb. It will last/stay nice much longer.
I don't know much about extensions, other than a couple of gals in my troupe have clip-in human hair extensions or volumizers that they use for performance. They look very nice, but I don't know that they'd be that helpful for you.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
one of my fellow dancers uses a fake ponytail all the time and it looks amazing. I use fake bangs which I also got from forever young and I love them. They give me a different look and are great for quick fixes when I don't have time to do my hair before a show or need to wash my hair. I do wear a headband with them though just in case but have never had a problem even in backbends

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
I've bought mine on e-bay from sellers Hair me now and capistrano bay.
I have several ponytails for different moods -- a bouncy curly short one, a medium one that is my go-to guy for most performances, and an uberlong one like Zana is wearing above. I love the look of the superlong one, but I don't wear it a lot because it's heavy, tends to tangle, and gets caught in veils too much.
I also have extensions, but my hair is too fine to cover the bases of them. Extensions means bis of hair that you clip in amongst your own to add length and volume. And I have a 3/4 wig, it's very pretty but it feels like I'm dancing in a wool hat, and I don't think it looks very natural.
Fake ponytails are the easiest to use. Just put your own hair in a little bun and clilp it on. A costume headband will often obscure the fact that it's not a perfect match. I usually pull down a few tendrils (in addition to my bangs) and give them a quick wave with a flatiron, the more of my own hair I leave loose the more natural it looks.
Caring for the ponies is important, the fake hair will break or get permanently kinked up if it's pulled on. You need:
Wig shampoo
Spray in conditioner (Revlon makes both, get them at Sally's)
A giant comb for detangling (a plastic 'shower comb' works well)
I don't wash them often, but I *always* hang them to dry after use (just clip them onto something in the house). I spray them and comb them out before I put them away, combing first the ends, then the middle & ends, then the whole thing. I store them in plastic bags (the ones sheets come in, usually).
Then they're ready to go with a quick combout. Fake hair, fake lashes & lilpstick takes about a minute and a half and makes you show-ready if there's no time for anything else!

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
contact me privately if you want 3/4 or full wigs . remy hair (top quality cuticle hair). i can get any color/any length up to about 30 inches, at wholesale.
they have caucasian skin colored silk mono tops (hand placed individual hairs that emerge out of a paper thin silk overlay on the crown, for a natural look. i like it much better than the plasticy mono top parts) and a wefted back (for breathability and ventilation on stage)
i wear the full wigs as a 3/4 for max volume. they can also be pinned to look like giganto - ponytails.
i've been wearing aftermarket hair on stage for many years, so when you decide what kind you want, tell me and i'll make a tutorial for you on application , care, storage, etc
imo, human hair is the way to go, what ever style you chose, because it moves most naturally on stage and photographs much better if blending with your own hair - with extensions, ponys, 3/4, etc. and you can heat style and set it as easily as your own hair.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
On Lauren's recommendation I ordered a LOOOONG pony from Capistrano Bay and love it. It is clip on and reversable so one way is smooth and straight and turn it the other for layered. I have a shorter pony by Easihair that I got from Wigs.com. Also reversable. I often wear it to work or when I am showing dogs cause I can just pull back my own hair into a ponytail and clip the hairpiece on top of it. Great for bad hair days. Another hairpiece I love is a wavy piece on a scrunchie. Great for updo.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
International Wigs®- the largest online wig and costume store.
I use this place. I love fake hair!! My hair, once dark, long, wavy, & lustrous ..l;,..l;, has um...changed...with age...is now bedecked in ponytails (wavy, straight), 3/4 wigs, Motown tresses spiral curl falls, a headful of those little braid thingys, U name it! Tho my natural color is dark, one time it got blonde (sort of hightlights gone mad-long story) so I got a straight blonde 3/4 w bangs. That was a trip. Yes blondes do seem to have more fun!?
To me, hair stuff is part of costuming for sure.
And! I've had so many different looks that no one thinks it's fake (well except the blonde). Oh, they're probably just humoring me tho.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
Sally Beauty Supply has a nice selection of phony ponies that clip on super easy. The prices are very reasonable too.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
okay, "real hair" is def the way to go, so that you can style it, curl it, straigten it, etc. Because I didn't shop around, my first set which is close to my natural hair color w/o highlites and such, cost me a lots of $$$ (about 12 pieces), I rationalized that "it was a costume" (cost as much as a new Eman costs). I've recently dyed my hair darker with highlights so I purchased a wefted back single piece already curled piece and no one knows the difference.
I do like the extensions that are multiple peices over the single piece because they tend to move with you better. I usually don't wear my ahir up so I've never tried a pony tail, but with the multiple pieces I can put my hair up.
I should add: mine extensions are clip-in human hair extension, the clips are like the type of clip you may have used when you were a kid, and I do them myself, take 10 mins to clip in and however longer to style depending on my mood.Last edited by SaNoorah; 01-24-2010 at 09:08 PM. Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
Just to provide a contrasting experience: I have clip-in human hair extensions and it takes me about 10 mins to put them in my hair all by myself. I really don't even need a mirror to put them in, just a clip of some kind to hold part of my hair up while I place the pieces and snap them in place.
Liquid eyeliner and false eyelashes give me *way* worse preparation anxiety.
If I go curly, I slather freezing hairspray on both the extensions and my hair as I go along, yet when I take them out they always slip out easily with no tangling problems. They are the most comfortable fake hair I've ever used and I love mine. The only problem is my hair is now the same length as them (they are 14" I think), so they add volume but no extra length, and soon they will be too short.

Re: Fake Ponytails and Other Helpful Muskrats
I get mine in the Garment district here in LA. If you make it down to NYC you will probably be able to find them in their garment district as well. For a couple different looks, go to my website. About half is pet hair.
